I am planning to create a Facebook advertisement for Steemit.com. I need an image to use for the add. Their recommended size is 1,200 x 628 pixels. The image will be shrunk down about 4-5x once it is placed in the ad though, so it needs to be something that will look good small. Also, they recommend having little to no text in the image.
Here is an example, just to show what one looks like:
Contest Rules:
- Users can submit their entries as comments to this post, or create their own separate post and put a link to it in the comments.
- Images should be 1,200 x 628.
- I will select one winner from all of the entries to use for the ad. The winner will be selected based on my own subjective preference, but votes and comments from the community will be taken into consideration.
- The winner will receive 50 STEEM or 75% of the liquid payout from this post (converted to STEEM) - whichever is greater.
- I will also award 10 STEEM to the top two runners up.
- The bounty/contest will run until this post payout closes.
- Winners will be selected and paid within 48 hours of the post closing.
- Users may submit as many entries as they would like.
I am really looking forward to seeing what the community comes up with!
Reminder to vote for witnesses!
The Steem witnesses are the elected leaders of the community that power the blockchain. If you don't know much about witnesses or aren't sure who to vote for, you can check out this Witness Voting Guide. If you think @timcliff is doing a great job as witness, I would really appreciate your vote!

Oh once i get some free time ill prob do this.
Those who don't know how to read you got 7 days..
looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Great idea @timcliff
Awesome, I'll look forward to seeing what you create :)
9 days?
Its says 48 hours of the post closing.
Post last for 7 days + 48 hours that's 9 days.
The contest is only open until the post payout closes. The extra 48 hours are for me to review them, test them in the Facebook ad app, and decide on a winner ;)
Oh okay... Updated lol
Great idea! Now I'm very curious to see the results of this. Last summer, I had taken a shot specifically for this purpose...
I thought the sky would give it the space needed to write and these Whistler stairs are rather world famous.
All for one and one for all! Namaste :)
Wow, very cool!! I like it :)
Based on my own advertising experience on FB, this is something closer to what should be shown. The text ad copy should be saved for the call-to-action placement above the ad.
Wow, that's awesome!
Thank you! It will still hold up fairly well at the smallest size in desktop-mode, side advertising. When they say little to no text in the graphic, they really mean it. All ads have to go through an approval process before they run.
Yeah, Tim, what @dawnmarie said - FB will reject your ad if it's not like 97% visual. It's no joke.
btw - great job dawnmarie! it's very classy.
@merej99 thank you very much!
Im a facebook ad man...the problem is not to have a good ad...its where you lead them. The signup process kills conversion right now.
Great point! Don't worry, I also have plans to write a kick-ass landing page.
"phase 1" can be seen here:
https://steemit.com/recruitment/@timcliff/help-me-collect-a-list-of-join-steemit-recruitment-posts-information-bounty-paying-1-steem-per-qualified-response
Awesome. In my humble opinion, communities will be the perfect landing pages since the audience, the ad and the landing page can be in sync. (With all the $$$ on it too)
https://steemit.com/socialmedia/@reisolutions/free-social-media-assets-to-promote-steemit
I whipped up some for everyone to use. Went light on the text because Facebook hates text with images, and tried to convey the community aspect of steemit, but the real selling point for this platform are the rewards.
If you feel like using one of these, please put 50% percent of the bounty back into the ad campaign.
Looking forward to seeing what the community comes up with!
Cool, thanks!
Hey I gave this a shot, nice post and contest!
Please check out my Blog here:

I really like it! One of my favorites so far :)
Changed it up a bit just an update, hand made. Take Care
Thanks hope it gives some ideas^^
first attempt
Nice!
Hello steemit community and sir @timcliff , please let me submit my 1st entry, I welcome criticism.. Feel free to bash hehe:)
It looks cool, but just based on the requirements from Facebook, there is not supposed to be much text in the image. I think it is something like 15% or less can be text, and the rest has to be graphic. Thanks for the entry though!
Ok sir, noted.. will revise it :) Thank you
My idea.
Interesting. Thanks for the entry!
Or probably something like would work better...
Another bounty for artists. I'm intrigued! I have a few questions though. Forgive me if they sound silly, but I do not use facebook, so I don't know what their ads are supposed to look like.
Can the image be an animated gif?
Is there a max file size or specific file type that must be used?
Also...
Should we be using the Steem logo? As the roadmap stated that Steemit will be getting its own, different logo from steem.
Do we have the creative freedom to use our own slogans for Steemit?
Hi @son-of-satire - thanks for your interest. I was really hoping you would participate :) I don't know the answers to your questions, but I will try to find out tonight and let you know. If you have the time, you could look them up - it is Facebook's ad rules, so they should be public.
For gifs, it looks like the answer is yes:
Format: .MOV, .MP4 or .GIF files
Resolution: at least 720p
File size: 2.3 GB max
Recommended aspect ratio: widescreen (16:9)
Facebook: 60 minutes max
You are welcome to use the Steem logo.
I would avoid slogans though. Facebook is pretty clear that they don't really want much text in the image. The less text the better.
I was hoping to get started on this today, but I must say, I'm incredibly confused now.
I was picturing a small ad that would appear at the side or the bottom of the screen.. But based no the specs you have provided, it sounds like you're looking for a full screen video.
Is there any chance you could provide me with a link to an example facebook ad? Or do I just need to turn off my adblocker and go to facebook?>
Your first impression was right. It is small. I only included the info on animated gif ones because you asked. There is an example in the post of what one looks like.
Is somebody like my idea ?
I do. I'm not sure if animated gifs will work for Facebook ads though. I'll try it out when I review the entries.
FB ads let you do multiple pics, thus creating a slide show. So something like the above would definitely work doing it that way.
That's a good tip - Thanks!
ok maybe I will try something else ;)
Here is my idea. I feel as though it captures the whole freelance writing, coffee shop vibe well.
Here is also just the image that is on the computer screen if you think that it would look better by itself.
I like it. Choosing a winner is going to be tough!!
I know that FB can be strict about too much text in ads. Here is the image without the "your voice is worth something." tagline. Let me know if you like it.
Cool!
Here is another one. Can you please give me a feedback on this? :D
https://steemit.com/steemit/@couch-potato/update-on-my-idea-of-steemit-facebook-advertisment
Or without steemit?
wow, I really like it!
Thanks. I'm glad you like it. :D
The three waves are recognizable as the logo only if you already know the logo, otherwise they look just like a fancy way to write three words. Just my open honest two cents.
Yeah I agree. When I think about it, it makes sense.
Thank you for your feedback. I've put the logo in the top right corner.
Is it better know @xinta?
Is it too much text @timcliff?
best of luck on this my friend. I ran a logo contest for my label here on steemit not long ago with great success a lot of talented people on here...
Hello Steemit,
I haven't been on Steemit in quite a long time as I focused largely on my other businesses while Steemit was in a little bit of a lul. I happened to log on to check things out and came across this post so I thought I would submit an option for you to use. In my other business (which I may start writing about here maybe ) I use Facebook Ads daily and generally design my own Ads. I have about 3 years of experience doing so.
I noticed others point out that Facebook wants high quality image ads with pretty much no text on the image. You want to save the text for the other areas of the Ad (text areas, offers, etc depending on type of Ad ).
So when I made this I used the same methods I do for my personal Ads, I strive to create something that hopefully stops a person from scrolling because the Ad caught their eye and make them check it out.
With out saying much more here is my submission. Just a FYI you can actually run multiple images on a single Ad and see KPI's through the FB interface if you find multiple images here you like!
Thanks and enjoy!
WOW!! This is amazing. Great job - thank you!
I took a look at your profile and noticed we are from the same state :) ... I'm from the Cloud area ... but we go back and forth between here and the Philippines throughout the year.
Hello, here's my entry #10 (I have the raw PSD for this and all icons are free to use):
(Improved logo to be emphasized even if it was "SCALED DOWN" and removed TEXT)
Awesome, thanks!!
Awesome!!
Hi timcliff,
that is a valuable plan! Thanks for offering this opportunity. Here are my entries:
First
Second
Third
& Fourth - my personal favorite:
all are free for commercial use
Awesome!
how about this one I design it a few days ago its a wallpaper but I can make it a FB Ad or cover very easy just let me know.
I like it!
great!
@timcliff - I assume you are talking about a FB ad campaign. My associate and I run these for clients and for our own sites and from our experience short videos provide a conversion and click rate leaps and bounds better than photos.
Just something to consider. I'm sure plenty of folks on steem would create video as well. Though it's best to have an actual face/person speaking. Maybe mitchell from PR or someone like that.
That's a great idea! I'm probably going to start out with an image based campaign, but I will definitely keep it in mind for a future project.
I'll see what I can do
This is really sweet. There is a fixed image resolution though - 1,200 x 628.
https://steemit.com/art/@nonameslefttouse/the-brain-behind-steemit
If someone wants to add some words to this, let me know. I don't do much in the graphic design department, but I do have my own digital art style.
Have a look, tell me what you think.
Cool :)
It's probably too large for something like this. It's meant to be a poster.
I really like it :)
It will shrink well, I'm sure of it. Get the marketing pros to add some font if they like it too. I made it specifically for this reason. I had no way of knowing you'd be putting up a bounty though.
I will share thru my facebook once finished ..
Steem on
Awesome!
How cool to see a "steemit" advertisement in the making!
Steem On!
My thoughts on advertising discussion. IMHO, I think that initial ad placement should begin on Youtube instead of Facebook. Why? Vloggers. That's an enormous community of CONTENT CREATORS who have already been hit hard by censorship, have been demonetized in the process, and whose placement algorithms are being manipulated to much lower visibility than ever. These are the users that are already desktop publishers. I don't see the same value, for now, in attracting a user baser from the likes of FB. These users, primarily on mobile devices, like everything spoon-fed to them, and they just regurgitate what they see with little effort. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. There needs to be an attempt to get a few of the big players from Youtube here to generate a broader scale of interest from users elsewhere down the road. These Youtube content creator/stars have their own turn-key audiences. Start at the top and work your way down, and let these creators help bring more users along with them. Carry on.
This is a really great suggestion. I think there is value in doing both. I actually came from Facebook, so not all Facebook users are bad ;) I do get what you are saying though. I plan to use their 'targeted interest' tool to direct the ad towards specific groups that I think will make the ad campaign successful.
That's fine. Just more food for thought conversation. I forget who posted a graph here, but the number of accounts here vastly outnumbers the number of daily authored posts . Attention spans are short. We need more quality authors to attact a quality audience. Keep on, keepin' on.
Cool...I make B&W ...go and look :)
Nice job - you are very talented.
Thank you!! and you are very kind to say this :)
What a great initiative. I am sure there will be a few very nice entries. If I can find the time I will participate myself.
I followed, upvoted and resteemed. Good luck with this one. :-)

Wow, these are awesome! Great job!!
Congratulations @timcliff!
Your post was mentioned in my hit parade in the following categories:
My 2nd entry. Feel to comment and to suggest some improvements.
I like it too, but same thing as far as the % text.
Ok sir, noted.. will revise my entries. Thank you :)
Just wanted to say this.. buried way down in the comments... timcliff is a machine.. a treasure in the rough. Who does this? He should be steemit staff.. with stock options or something. :P
That's the beauty of the platform. We all get stock options in a way. If the platform succeeds, then the value of all our Steem Power goes up :)
Yes.. I know... but you're one of the few that realize it... it seems.. There are a LOT of people here as early adopters making posts, curating, all worried about what goes in their pocket right now. If no one looks out for expanding this system, then the whole thing is short lived. You and I need to find a way to get that into people's heads. :)
This wonderful work friend to support this community
Sorry my friend is not an expert in image design
second and probably final attempt. Honestly? I love Dawn's. LOL
Very cool, thanks for your entries. I do too, lol :)
very interesting thanks for posting - Subbed!
This is an awesome idea!! Here's my entry!
Cool, thanks for your entry! Unfortunately though, Facebook is somewhat strict as far as not having much text in the image. It needs to be most art/graphic.
How about making it more visual, like this one:
Interesting :)
Here you go! Also good for Instagram!!
Thanks Hipster Mum (pic credit), SM (artwork)
Steamit_Ad.jpg
Cool!
upvoted and resteemed for propaganda purposes. fuck facebook
Well, I'm not sure if you'll like my plan - I'll actually be paying Facebook to run the add, hehe. Hopefully we'll get some of the users to head our way though. At least that is the intent :)
I would pay Facebook money to kill their business :)
Hah. Well then I guess our goals mutually align ;)
great idea! love the work
Awesomeness, that is a lot of Steem!
Here's my idea.
Thanks for the opertunity to do something like his. https://steemit.com/steemit/@couch-potato/my-steemit-com-facebook-advertisment-idea
Heh, why not?
Thanks for the entry :)
Just taking this opportunity to say "THANK YOU FOR FOLLOWING ME"
Good times yes a lot of money
Hehe, good ones :)
Anyone else notice tfj go through and flag a bunch of comments on this post?
Hmm, yea. I'm not sure why. He doesn't have much SP, so it shouldn't have much of an effect.
Anyways, here's all the raw PSDs for the design entries I've made. Please feel free to use them in anyway you like. :)

It mean a steemit ads to promote in facebook @timcliff ?
That's the plan :)
