I don't believe they always think they are "smart". Some realize they are better off selling in a bear market and rebuying later than if they ride it down all the way.
If the market turns around turn bull after selling, then just buy back in and sit and hold. Both situations can be beneficial in different circumstances.
Sometimes you have to make a bad decision now to prevent making a worse decision later.
Maybe they're both right!
