Something I've wondered since joining is why the formatting is so complicated. Why aren't there just buttons like in Google Docs for the different things? Do you know why it's not easier?

I'm guessing it's because Steemit was created by devs who are used to using codes. I agree, it would be easier for new users to be able to just click buttons.
Ah, right. That must be it. Many coders I know really dislike having UIs and prefer doing things in code or through a console.
