I think it's definitely a necessity, I mean how are you supposed to survive as a couple of you don't do things like go out on dates, get gifts for each other or even something as basic as paying for calls that you make to each other.
Maybe I would have said money isn't necessary a couple of years ago, but after being in my fair share of relationships, I've come to realise that almost no normal relationship can survive without money. It's an indispensable resource that's required for every relationship to succeed because no matter how you see it, you're going to have to spend money at one point in time.
Imagine not having any money at all and being unable to buy some minutes or purchase data bundles to talk, or chat with your partner. Your relationship would probably die from a lack of communication. Then there's also the fact that even if you don't want to go out and spend time in doors together, you still have to eat when you're together and unless you're a farmer who lives off the land, you're going to need money.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, love isn't enough to make a relationship successful, money isn't enough either, but the both of them have to be present along with other things for a relationship to be successful. If not for anything so that you can maintain contact with your partner.
I hope this helps.
