Life is so busy, that other things can easily take away from valuable time spent with our spouses. Spontaneity, while it can be fun, is vastly overrated and people who rely solely upon it are likely to be disappointed.
Scheduling, as you point out, doesn't have to be unromantic. In fact, making a definite point of setting aside special times to be with your spouse is the height of romance because it's a way of saying 'you're so important to me that no matter what else is trying to pull me in other directions, there's nothing I'd rather do than be with you.'
