Labour Day travels,
This American holiday surprised me as I'm still getting used to the new vacation structure over my Europian background. I've found myself taking a drive over to Elysian Park, the place where the first europian travels visiting inland California camp back in 1769.
I envisioned a wealth a plant and animal life filled with hikers, cyclists, and families out enjoying the typical L.A. weather. To my surprise, this was not the case.
After driving around the park in search of the best place to stop I became more and more aware that my expectations would not become reality. A dry and barren area of land littered with trash and almost no animals would be the extent of my experience.
As I began walking around I couldn't help but imagine a location that used to be how I envisaged, however, the sheer expense of Los Angeles had moved this activity away from the city. Rather than families looking forward to all day BBQ's with friends, it was now a place for the social media selfies on a tree swing or cute couples with the distant backdrop of DTLA.
A strong presence of gang life could be found "18th Street", "Bloods" and "38th Street" tags covered most of the structures even the surrounding rocks could be found covered in multiple taggings.
My experience was not as expected but as always in L.A. thought-provoking. Yet another example of how the city has changed and changed again in a short period of time. It will continue to change and be a central space for the influx of people arriving from all around the world.
