Lightpainting and and basics of long exposure photography [DE+EN]

Long exposure photography

All of you have seen this amazing star-trail pictures or the waterfalls where the water looks so soft. This are two examples of the long exposure photography and there are so much more. The exposure time is longer than normal. This "longer" could be 2 seconds or 30 minutes. The camera has to stand still during the photo.

My favourite kind of long exposure: Lightpainting

Lightpainting

What's lightpainting ?
For lightpainting you use the long exposure photography. During the shutter is open, you could paint with light or several shining elements i.e. flashlights or fire.

What do I need ?
This is the list of the basic equipment I use:

cameraCanon Eos 60d
lens17-85mm (default)
tripodVery old one from my father
remote shutterJJC

Here a list of the things I paint with:
  • flashlights
  • sparklers
  • steel-wool
  • chain of lights
  • lightsabers or other shining toys
  • and more flashlights with blades
  • ...
blades are all the things, you could put infront of a flashlight to have a larger colourful light i.e. coloured plastic bottles.
You could take nearly everything. At the right are some of the tools I use.

Here are some of my lightpainting photos

Maybe you could recognize the tools of the photo above

It's to cold and it's raining, I can't go outside.

That's no excuse not to try, you could even lightpaint at home in your room.
Let's talk about the camera settings:

exposure timenormaly between 10 and 60 seconds
aperturedepends on the light you paint with, between 4 and 11
ISOdepends on the light around and your camera, between 200 and 1250

Have you recognize the tools ?
I think that wasn't the last article about lightpainting, I have more photos I want to share and I'll discribe the technique for orbs and domes in detail.
Feel free to ask in the comments or tell me what I could improve.

OMG! This is SUCH an AMAZING post! Thank you for sharing! I gave you a vote!!

Thanks a lot :)

Nice one! I like the domes :)
