Long exposure photography
Lightpainting
What's lightpainting ?
For lightpainting you use the long exposure photography. During the shutter is open, you could paint with light or several shining elements i.e. flashlights or fire.
What do I need ?
This is the list of the basic equipment I use:
camera | Canon Eos 60d |
---|---|
lens | 17-85mm (default) |
tripod | Very old one from my father |
remote shutter | JJC |
my camera on the tripod
Here a list of the things I paint with:
You could take nearly everything. At the right are some of the tools I use.
- flashlights
- sparklers
- steel-wool
- chain of lights
- lightsabers or other shining toys
- and more flashlights with blades
- ...
You could take nearly everything. At the right are some of the tools I use.
Here are some of my lightpainting photos
Maybe you could recognize the tools of the photo above
this is called an orb
It's to cold and it's raining, I can't go outside.
That's no excuse not to try, you could even lightpaint at home in your room.
Let's talk about the camera settings:
exposure time | normaly between 10 and 60 seconds |
aperture | depends on the light you paint with, between 4 and 11 |
ISO | depends on the light around and your camera, between 200 and 1250 |
this is called a dome
Have you recognize the tools ?
I think that wasn't the last article about lightpainting, I have more photos I want to share and I'll discribe the technique for orbs and domes in detail.
Feel free to ask in the comments or tell me what I could improve.

OMG! This is SUCH an AMAZING post! Thank you for sharing! I gave you a vote!!
Thanks a lot :)
Nice one! I like the domes :)
Thanks
