Alexander the Great met Diogenes: one of the most memorable moments in human history

in #literature8 years ago (edited)

There was a man which actions were so enormous to attract the interests of Alexander the Great, one of the greatest Emperors of all time. His name was Diogenes.
Diogenes was a Greek philosopher (412 - 323 B.C.) considered one of the founders of the cynical school.
He lived with nothing but a little bowl made of wood, however he decised to destroy it when he saw a boy drinking from his own hands.
There were lot of legends about this crazy man, the one who "has everything" but that "has nothing", nothing that was material obiviously; but Alexander wanted to see and to prove those rumors by himself, a characteristic of his being that helped him to become what he was, a great Emperor .
So this is what is written by Laertius about this fact:

Thereupon many statesmen and philosophers came to Alexander with their congratulations, and he expected that Diogenes of Sinope also, who was tarrying in Corinth, would do likewise. But since that philosopher took not the slightest notice of Alexander, and continued to enjoy his leisure in the suburb Craneion, Alexander went in person to see him; and he found him lying in the sun. Diogenes raised himself up a little when he saw so many people coming towards him, and fixed his eyes upon Alexander. And when that monarch addressed him with greetings, and asked if he wanted anything, "Yes," said Diogenes, "stand a little out of my sun." It is said that Alexander was so struck by this, and admired so much the haughtiness and grandeur of the man who had nothing but scorn for him, that he said to his followers, who were laughing and jesting about the philosopher as they went away, "But truly, if I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes."

It is said that Alexander and Diogenes died on the same days, but this is not confirmed. However I like to think it is real :)

Very interesting and Alexander the Great was a fascinating character himself. He basically conquered half the world by the time he was in his early 30s and died by the age of 34. That's even before he has time for a mid-life crisis. Shame about the Cheetah auto-detector. Perhaps you could use blockquotes and maybe that won't trigger it? Here's the guide i refer to: https://github.com/adam-p/markdown-here/wiki/Markdown-Cheatsheet#blockquotes

Surely he was! In fact there are lot of films and books about him.
Thank you for the link, It was useful.

Hi! I am a robot. I just upvoted you! I found similar content that readers might be interested in:

That part of the article was a quote. So the one who really wrote those words were Diogenes Laërtius, and not the one who wrote the article in the link you sent me... I know you are a robot but I hope someone will see this comment and answer to me for this misunderstanding.
