A year and a half ago, my oldest son got his very first pet- a betta fish that he appropriately named Batey!
My son at the age of 7 became the best little fish dad any fish could wish for. He cleaned his tank, he fed him, he talked to him, he took pictures of him, he sang to him, he gave him snacks (fish snacks), he read him stories; just as a good dad does!
The last couple months, our little fish wasn’t acting quite normal. He became very slow in all he did. He would just hang out in one spot of his tank for days on end. He didn’t seem to be eating as much as usual, etc.
This past week, it all came to a head and sadly, our sweet Batey passed away.
My son is with his dad in TN right now, so I wanted to make sure he had a chance to say goodbye, once I knew it was coming to the end. So I FaceTimed him to let him know what was going on.
It was the sweetest and saddest moment I’ve experienced with him, in his little 7 years of life! He cried, I cried, it was a very touching moment, but also a very proud mom moment for me.
My sweet 7 year old boy was about to lose his first ever pet, he wasn’t here to be with him, he was 7 hours away. But after he cried, he wiped his tears, composed himself and said, let me talk to him. He prayed over his fish and he told him how great of a fish he was and that he loved him and was going to miss him.
He then told me that he wanted to bury him and get him a proper tombstone when he got home. He’s like, it needs to be me who buries him mom, I’ll do it.
I’m constantly blown away by this kid, and blessed beyond measure that God gave me such a sweet, caring and compassionate boy! I’m one lucky momma!

Thank you dad! So glad you guys could be there with him to help love on him through this. I'm also so proud of him! He's such a mature boy!
wow, you told her about listnerds too. That's good man!
Just trying to be a good dad.
Well-You've blown that goal out of the water! You're the BEST!!! 😉
Thanks, Kelly
Oh my gosh, reading this teared me up! He sure is a sweet and caring little boy!
It says a lot when a child is already so caring about a fish passing, I was the same, all of my animals meant much to me, even if they were fishes!
Batey was a beautiful little fish, hopefully in fish heaven!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful story! <3
Thank you for saying that! He really is a special boy! He loves deeply!
The world needs more kids like that <3
Lovely fish. Beautiful color. I know he made one little boy very happy during the time they were together.
Thanks for sharing.
Read from LN
He sure did!
What a touching story, I'm sorry for your son, I can tell he's caring and has a big heart. Sad, but can I say this must have been a great experience for the kid? Thank you for sharing.
It was so good for him, helped him to grow in so many ways. And I'm so proud to see him dealing with it so maturely.
His action and response are with a maturity well above his age, this kid is special.
He truly is! Thank you
Sweet boy..
Isn't he?! xoxo
So sorry for your son. It is always sad to love someone or something you love but as we all know it is an part of life unfortunately. Thanks for sharing.
It really is. Good but hard lessons to learn.
