Hello to everyone!
I recently read an article on ‘Promoting Scientific Lifestyle’ featuring the insights from MIT graduated and physicist Max Tegmark. His main argument was that even after scientist have been able to grasp so much of scientific knowledge they have been unable to teach these concepts to common non-scientific people.
His biggest concern seemed to be how people make their everyday decisions. According to a survey mentioned in that article only; more than 40 percent of people in US believes that human species is less than ten thousand years old. It baffles him how people can make rational decision based knowledge that is way off the charts! How are they supposed to make right choices for the sake of improving their own lives? A reasonable answer seems to be the right kind of education. A scientific living is based on two things: gathering information and using that information. You’re more likely to make an intelligent decision when you’ve the full-spectrum of arguments before making up your mind, yet there’re many reasons why people don’t get the complete information. While some don’t have the access to it, others only seek the informations which confirms their preconceptions, or even if they don’t, the facts can be difficult to find, they are buried in wrong, incorrect and unscientific media avalanche.
The core idea behind the scientific lifestyle is to change our mind when the facts starts to disagree with your views, and avoid intellectual inertia. However we praise leader who stubbornly stand-up for their beliefs as “strong”. According to famous physicist Richard Feynman, “Distrust in experts” is the cornerstone of science, yet herd mentality and blind faith in authorities is widespread. Moreover logic forms the basis of scientific conclusions, yet wishful thinking and irrational fears are seen to constantly dominate our thought process.
To wrap up, our day to day choices should be based on complete research about its pros and cons. By making right choices we increase our chances at succeeding and it is also beneficial to our lives in general.
