You hit the alarm button one too many times. It is now 7:45 in the a.m. and you are supposed to be to work by 9:00. "Oh SHIT...This Again" you think to yourself as you jump out of bed and run to the bathroom to turn the shower on. "Fuck fuck fuck... If I get there late my boss/team leader/cohorts are gonna flip" you think to yourself as you kick something on the floor stubbing your toe, and fall somewhat halfway into the door jam banging your shoulder on the way to the bathroom.
You turn the shower on and you run back to get clothes, but you need to pee so you run halfway to the bedroom, then decide to go back and pee first. You lift the lid and seat (or sit if you are a lady) and you go...Trying to hurry the entire business. What you don't think about is that you just waisted the few seconds you needed to take your time going to the bathroom by running to your room and then changing your mind. Not sure about that?
How about this...
What you also don't think about is the stubbed toe, that will now take 0.01 seconds off EVERY step you take because you are not walking unimpaired, and since you have to take 5,000 steps to work (which is 50 seconds by the way) you could have taken more time to pee and to shave, which you didn't because you rushed and cut yourself to pieces, taking more time to put toilet paper on your neck, and even though you did that you still didn't stop yourself from getting blood on your collar (or you skirt if you were shaving your legs quickly as a woman).
Do you see where this is going?
We can keep going with a myriad of other examples but rather than give you a run-down of your every THIRD morning, let's focus on what is going on here.
Energy. What you are doing is creating your own energy field which is attracting to you all the things you associated with HURRY. Chaos is associated with HURRY because of the simple principles of molecules. You excite yourself. Your entire body is made up of what? Molecules, atoms, ultimately energy in it's different forms. Now you are exciting all of it and guess what? Things become more chaotic when they are excited. Your movements are more chaotic, hitting the wall when you stub your toe as an over compensation to the stubbing of the toe, which was caused by your lack of focus because of your chaotic state. Your micro-motor movements become more macro and you cut yourself shaving because your speed is chaotically interfering with your other motor sensory skills.
Everything you do becomes more and more chaotic as the excited energy bounces back and forth ricocheting off itself into more chaos.
So, what can you do?
You can stop time is what you can do.
Rather than jumping out of bed, stay in bed... Sit up. Touch your feet to the floor and ground yourself.
Close your eyes and empty your mind. DO NOT think.
DO NOT think about your next steps. DO NOT think about your being late. DO NOT think about your hunger or your full bladder. DO NOT THINK.
Just breathe. Breath 1...2...3.
Take a breath in through your nose, counting 1...2...3 as you do so your breath is a 3-count in.
Now exhale and do the same count but breath out your mouth slightly open. DO NOT MOUTH BREATH. Just breath slowly out a small opening of the lips.
Do this five to ten times until you no longer feel the fear or anxiety. Do this until everything returns to balance.
Then...and ONLY then think about what you HAVE to accomplish to get to work on time.
You have to pee. So that is first. But you have to shower also. You also have to brush your teeth. We know this. In your mind settle on peeing in the shower while you brush your teeth.
"Don't use tooth paste because it saves you a couple seconds just using a brush and water" you think to yourself.
"Don't shampoo your hair. Dampen it and comb it out to save time in that process."
While you are still on the bed with your eyes closed envision yourself in the shower and observe there are a couple minutes in there you can use. Make your mind up to be focusing on what you will wear while you scrub your jublies.
See it in your mind. See yourself in the shower picking out, in your head, the shirt, shoes, pants, socks and underwear you will wear. Know you will do this when you get to the shower.
Then in your mind see that while you are getting dressed there is now time to focus on the things you will need to get to work and be efficient. Things such as keys, laptop, gym bag for after work, wallet, etc. You will also need energy from a fuel source such as food.
See in your mind that you can contemplate that while you are getting out of your house. You can call or order on your phone while you are walking to work? Can you take a snack and eat on the way and get something at the office?
You will figure this out and then be on your way. As you walk in your mind's eye envision the walk and yourself following the path of least resistance while staying alert to changing conditions in your path. You will not rush. You will not run.
Time slows for those who are at ease, not for those who are in a hurry.
Slow is smooth, and smooth will be fast. I promise. Now open your eyes and go.
