Self-Education and Non-Academic Courses

A new booming industry and valuable resource are available online via digital courses. The format is usually video lectures, quizzes, handouts, and feedback forms. With online digital based courses, you can easily get access to leaders in the field, entrepreneurs, professors, and experienced teachers.

Benefits of doing online courses are that they are relatively cheap, convenient (regardless of where you live and what time you can dedicate to study), and most of the information is cutting edge stuff. Going through universities for acquiring many skills is not as necessary these days. Obviously, for some professions such as medicine, law, and so forth, university courses are the requirement, but for many other skills and professions, it is not absolutely necessary to attend a university (and get yourself into heavy debt).

The disadvantage of online courses is the lack of real person-to-person contact and having scheduled times and environments in which to engage with study. Hence, the completion rate of courses, even after people have purchased them, is very low at around 10%. And the general trend is that the larger and the more content in the course, the less likely people will complete it. Therefore, choosing to research, purchase, and commit to an online course will require more than just enthusiasm.

A few strategies to increase completion rates for you is to take on smaller, manageable courses that hit your subject of interest directly (e.g., How to use AdWords advertising, which may involve 1-2hrs of study vs. a Bachelor degree in Internet businesses, which will require 3-4 years of full-time study).

Make sure you have space and time in your schedule before taking on too many new things and if you choose a course, focus on completing the course completely before taking on another course. Be intense if you need to have a late night if required to get through the work. Sometimes, all you need is one new piece of knowledge or insight to make a big change, so it is worth it.

Subjects that you used to have to go to a college or university to learn you can now learn through online courses. Subjects include IT, Business, Marketing, Graphic Design, Web Design, Writing, Publishing, Videography, Video Editing, Internet Marketing, Life Coaching, Aromatherapy, Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Photography, and much more.

It has never been easier to learn new skills that can add value to a business and increase your potential in the marketplace.
