We don’t have to look very hard or too deep to see that the world, both inside and outside our bodies, is constantly pulsing, ebbing and flowing. From our heartbeat and our brain waves to the cycles of the moon, tides, day and night. It appears as through everything is in some cosmic dance of rhythm and movement. Therefore, what would it look like if we were to fully sync up with moving and grooving of this cosmic rhythm? Welcome to the art of harmonic timing.
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
~ Lao Tzu
To begin to master the art of timing, we have to come to a place where we recognize that there is something much larger than just us at play. There is a very complex and potentially infinite power or will that is expressed by the universe in the unfolding of events. This natural unfolding process gives rise to the movements of harmonic timing.
wisdom comes flooding through.
Wisdom
We all have tastes of wisdom throughout the previous stages of living an inspired life. However, it tends to come up in small bursts and doesn’t stay around for long. When we come to this level, however, wisdom tends to flow through daily, so much so that it eventually becomes a natural way of being in the world.
Wisdom naturally arises when we come to acknowledge and move into and align with the natural cycles of life and their varied expressions. It is a process and a practice of allowing things to move through us, unhindered and without resistance. Because of this open flowing effect throughout, strange things often begin to occur in the body.
For example, we may experience an unleashing of stored potential energy coming through that may have you highly awake at all hours. Or we may be woken by “whisperings” at 3 am in the morning encouraging us to get up. Flashes of “knowingness” seem to suddenly become obvious and are immediately evident through the body and mind. Often, allergies and health problems disappear, and physical coordination to carry out a particular action suddenly come “online” without any previous training. Heightened and altered states of consciousness suddenly present much similar and sometimes more powerful than any drug triggers. Sexual energy and bodily sensitivity dramatically increases and so-called random meetings and conversations with highly inspiring beings become the norm.
As I mentioned the word “sex” in the previous paragraph, it is worth spending a few extra words here because many people get caught up in sexual energy and confuse it with wisdom, spirituality, or even enlightenment. There may be a time during our personal development that we will move into a period of intense sexual energetic activation. It’s a natural part of the awakening and empowerment process as we move out of our conditioning and awaken dormant energy in our system. However, once we continue to evolve and learn what we need to from those experiences, that energetic phase or intensity with sexuality will often taper off. It tapers off because one comes to see all of life as one unending state of completeness.
Therefore, sex comes to be recognized more as a joyful act and celebration of the continuum of awareness itself, which is a just a natural, organic process. At higher levels of awareness, it is not made into some kind of deity to be worshiped as anything uniquely special, highly spiritual, or otherworldly. Therefore, be wary of those who claim to use and teach sexuality as a form of heightened spirituality.
This level of wisdom comes about partly through the development of the intellect, combined with an acute and objective observation practice with the ability to surrender to whatever arises. The intellectual development allows for enhanced capacity for both abstraction and complexity, which support the heightened states of awareness. The ability to observe objectively, nonjudgmentally, and openly is what triggers the ability to see the order within the chaos, and sense the interconnected nature of all things. The wisdom that comes through is not a kind of mental exercise or based in conceptual understanding. It simply comes through as a “knowing” and a “core feeling”. The practice of surrendering to what is as it arises with a heightened perception of “seeing” is what burns up the attachments to the past, our conditioning, and essentially ego-mind identification, which leaves one open and unending. The more we burn up the ego mind identification, the more open and wise the person naturally becomes.
One of the greatest teachers of harmonic timing is nature. For people who reach this level, they may be drawn out of the cities and into natural environments as a way to deepen their connection to the teachings of nature and to attune to harmonic timing. Of course, you do not need to be at this level to appreciate and crave the presence of nature, for it is natural for the human being to seek out such a connection. However, those who lack the capacity to observe objectively are less likely to be able to receive the subtle teachings from Mother Nature, regardless of what environment they live in.
Even though Mother Nature does provide a fertile environment in which to develop ones inner wisdom, it is important to not get caught up in the idea that we need to always be in nature to access our wisdom intelligence. When we get established in wisdom and harmonic timing, it is very possible to return to the cities and re-enter large social groups without losing our connection.
At this level, we are no longer intellectually driven but more driven by heightened sensitivity to the subtle forces of life. These subtle forces are most often experienced as a “knowing” and a “feeling” that comes not from oneself. Another word that can help us work with harmonic timing is “intuition”. Intuition is a direct expression of harmonic timing. You just get a feeling or sense that it would be wise to “move on”, to “go here” or “there”, or pick up the phone to call a person. It is the universal fabric pulling on our strings to direct us toward our highest potential in any particular moment.
One of the most profound openings for wisdom to arise is through the acknowledgment and acceptance of death of the human body and form. Facing the truth of your own human mortality, and the mortality of all forms, opens up the potential for great wisdom because it is through the process of death that one comes to truly appreciate being alive. Therefore, the art of living is entwined in the art of dying.
The experience of things dying does not have to be associated to the dramatic end of one's mortal body. If we investigate into death, it is really just an expression of change, from nothing to something, some form, then back to nothing once again. With little effort, we can easily see that our thoughts, emotions, and experiences are always moving and shifting in this same way. This, therefore, is a direct experience of death, or change, that we experience every moment of every day. Everything is moving, changing, dying. For new experiences to come in, for new relationships, for new ideas, there must be space in which those things can arise, and the space is generated through the act of dying and changing phenomenon. Paradoxically, the one who learns to let go, to allow themselves to die completely to each moment, are completely open, spacious, receptive, and fully alive.
To be fully alive, open, and receptive, one must be willing to die to each passing moment.
Getting the fundamentals of harmonic timing down is essential for attuning to its ways and opening the potential for greater wisdom to come through. To get that connection established, it may be helpful to work with these simple daily actions:
- when to wake,
- when to sleep,
- when to eat and,
- action vs. non-action.
Through all of these expressions, there is no hard and fast rule, it takes intuition and sensitivity to sense the best times to engage in these practices. However, there does tend to be general guidelines that can help us get started.
When to wake
The best time to wake is anywhere between 4 and 7 am. This is because at this time, the energy of the day is fresh and the mind is clear. This is also the natural time for most day animals to wake. When to sleep
Before 11 pm is a good place to start. Staying up too late impedes on the body’s ability to detox and repair the organ system. Also, it's important to access the dream world each night because this is where we receive a lot of information from our higher selves. When to eat.
This is different for most people and this takes time to work out for yourself. The main thing I would advise is to always eat a protein-fuelled breakfast around 7-9am. Many people get caught up in the details of food, often becoming intensely obsessive about it. Any obsessive behavior is a sure sign of a disconnect with harmonic timing and true wisdom because in the space of harmonic timing, there is no such things as worry or anxiety. When to take action vs. non-action
The natural tendency in this day and age is that people tend to take action more than non-action. In other words, they tend to interfere by imposing their own personal will into the situation rather than sit back and wait for the higher source of power to sort it out. Non-action doesn’t mean that no action is taking place, it means that no action is coming from you directly. So what non-action really means is to step back and let the higher power work it out without interfering or imposing.
Practice/Exercise:
Put on some of your favorite music that has a good solid beat to it and dance around your room with reckless abandon. Do this at least once a week. Nothing is more evident to the power of rhythms than the power of music. Music has a supernatural ability to move us out of mental functions and invites us to connect with the pulsating intelligence running throughout our bodies.
Spend more time in nature. Reduce or avoid using your phones or technology gadgets when in nature.
Practice sitting in any chair or any comfortable position and not moving or doing anything for at least 5 minutes. Just observe and let things pass through you unhindered.
Practice forgetting everything you know by simply letting yourself become empty for 5 minutes or so. Just allow yourself to breathe and just be empty.
Go to bed when you are tired. Eat only when you are hungry. Get out of bed when you first awake in the morning.
