It sounds like a similar culling at the company I do consultant work for. They are in the construction equipment business and sales have been shitty in Asia for the last few years so they shit canned about 5% of the engineers. Out of the team of engineers I worked with they layed of one guy. He was super smart, good at his job but never followed the corporate structure and he'd go over his bosses head to get things done.
