The 16th Student Technical Symposium And Exhibition(STSE) 2018 - The Abuja Experience

in #life7 years ago (edited)

After 14 years of contesting for the trophy, the petroquiz competition seemed like an impossibility for the SPE University of Uyo student chapter. The top schools had always been the University of Ibadan (UI), university of port Harcourt(uniport), and university of Benin( uniben).

university Of Uyo Contestants 2017/2018. Winning Back To Back.

The University of Uyo was always kicked out in the first round of the competition. But at the 14th year of the STSE, we made it to the 2nd round for the first time. At that point, we were excited that though we didn't make it to the finals, we made it to the second round.

WHAT HAPPENED 2017
In the year 2017, the University of Uyo won the bid to host the 2017 Student Technical Conference Exhibition(STCE) as it was then called. As hosts that year, we didn't want the trophy to leave our school. All hands were put on deck to not only bring the event to a success, but to keep the trophy that the defending champions of that year (university of port Harcourt) came with. And to God be the glory, we won 2017.

First winning at University of Uyo

This gave many of our students a lot of educational advantage as they qualified to contest at Dallas Texas.
First runner up was university of Benin(uniben) and second runner up was university of Lagos(unilag). 2 contestants out of 6 from University of Benin got visa to Dallas Texas. And 3 contestants from the University of Lagos got visa. Unfortunately, all contestants from the University of Uyo were denied visa.
That day was a sorrowful day as we weren't given the opportunity to finally compete outside the country and win the highest award.

Followed by the SPE Nigeria Council PetroQuiz XVI (final). Finals of the petroQuiz which started on Thursday 15th February 2018.

It started with the 4th round as university of Uyo Vs university of port Harcourt, the game was tough and we were already scared of losing to university of port Harcourt, as it started with uniport leading with 12 point and we had no point. It ended in a tie of 39:39. There was a tie breaking mathematics question with which the first school to give the correct answer wins for the round.

University of Uyo on stage

University of port Harcourt were the first to give their answer but it turned out to be wrong, then our team university of Uyo gave the second answer which turned out to be correct and we miraculously won over university of port Harcourt and there was an uproar in the house.

Then university of Ibadan(UI) Vs university of Lagos (Unilag) went next. University of Ibadan won against university of Lagos.

Obafemi Awolowo university (OAU) went against Petroleum Training Institute(PTI) and OAU won against PTI.

IMG-20180218-WA0023.jpg

Federal university of technology(FUTO) competed with Obafemi Awolowo university (OAU) and OAU won.

FINALS FOR 3RD PLACE
Obafemi Awolowo university (OAU) competed against University of Ibadan(UI).
And OAU won the third place in the finals and they are the second runner up.

The hall got more tensed as it was time to determine the overall winner of the contest.
Before the contests began, University of Uyo was underrated. Comments from other universities was that we won 2017 because of home advantage(as the PetroQuiz for that year held in University of Uyo).

Others were like

"can anything good come out of Nazareth?".
Referring university of Uyo as Nazareth.

We almost lost hope as University of Benin(uniben) openly announced themselves as our rivals, but gained back our hope as they were defeated by FUTO.

We were challenged as others schools said "let's see if you guys will win this time". At this point we knew they were well prepared. Our only hope was God, we prayed.

UNIVERSITY OF UYO (UNIUYO) WON AGAIN
We(university of Uyo students) competed for the trophy with FUTO and university of Uyo.
During the final round of the contest, a question from current affairs section was asked and a funny reply from the University of Uyo contestants was given. The moderator asked "who is the Prime Minister of Egypt" and due to the fact that university of Uyo contestants could not answer any question from the current affairs section, @uwemedimo decided to give an answer and he muttered "Pharaoh".
The judges and the moderator could not contain with the laughter as they called us Uyo.com
It was the fun part of the contest and it leased some tension in the hall as students from other schools started calling us Uyo.com

University of Uyo won again...twice in a roll. It was indeed a great victory .and the joy in our hearts are filled.
