Cynicism and resignation are the context. You know it.

in #life8 years ago

Mostly people shrug their shoulders. About politics, about their family, about the institution they work in, and about the way society works. The context is 'can't make a difference - why bother - we're all screwed'. It's overwhelmingly the current human context and has been for a long time. That would be okay, except that context is what gives rise to our actions.

Example: if I think I'm going to make $1000 writing a Steemit post, I'm likely to write a Steemit post. If I think my brother is the busiest guy in the world, I'll probably invite someone else to play golf.

So, if you are currently not taking the actions to impact your life that's because of the context you have. Altering the context would seem a sensible thing. How do you do that?

The access to altering your context is language. First you distinguish what your current context is. Until you've done that you don't have the context; the context has you. Once you've discovered and languaged the context, you know you actually have one. Then you have the option of creating a new one.

Imagine you want to invite a lady out on a date, but you're nervous. You might discover the context is, say, 'she won't find me attractive because I'm short and she is tall. So she won't be interested'. Until you work out that context, you just won't invite her out. Once you've worked out the context you can put it on the table, examine it and decide whether it serves you well. Then, if you want, you can invent another context, say, 'she has a similar sense of humour to me'. With that as the context you might find yourself writing her a whimsical note or asking her out to some stand-up. In other words, you'll take actions consistent with your context.

Your actions or inactions are a direct correlate of your context. Now, unfortunately, just knowing that you can alter the context is not the same as being able to do it.

If you're interested in this stuff, I recommend a course called the Landmark Forum (I lead introductions to this course on an unpaid basis). 24 years after doing that course and after a heap of research I would assert that bang-for-buck it's the world's leading personal development program. If you just had a cynical and resigned reaction to that, I recommend you re-visit your context.
