The north Yungas road in Boliva, also known as the death road is commonly cited as the most dangerous road in the world, and for good reason!
At certain points along the road there is over a 15,000 ft drop! falling from the road would mean certain death! Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens to an estimated 300 people a year who fall from the road!
The 40 mile long road remains one of Boliva's most visited tourists spots, attracting over 25,000 adrenaline fuelled mountain bikers each year who cycle the route.
If it wasn't for the deadly threat of the road it might acttually be quite a beautiful tourist spot due to it's serene location. From the road you see stunning views of the Amazon Rainforest, and they really are stunning - check out the photo above.
With an estimated 300 fatalities a year why do locals still use the road?
Unfortunately for the locals the road is a vitally important transport link, causing them to risk their lives on a daily basis with each trip they make!
The most dangerous and thinnest point of the road is only 3 metres wide! - when two cars meet at this point it must be absolutely terrifying.
Want to cycle this killer road?
If you are crazy enough to want to cycle this road (and you must be either mad or stupid) you can with organised cycle tours such as Gravity Bolivia who will guide you through the once in a life time trip through the clouds, rainforest and waterfalls. - The tours start at La Cumbre around an hours drive from La Paz.
Let me know in the comments, would you dare cycle the most dangerous road in the world?
Hope you enjoyed.
