Lessons Learned After Almost 2 Years on Steemit - My Advice - The Dos and Don'ts

in #life7 years ago

It's been 20 months! To celebrate and give back to my amazing followers I will upvote five comments on this post 100%.
I have so much to thank Steemit for. New friends, opportunities, and knowledge! So here is some free advice from me to you!

Screenshot_1.png

Do:

  • be genuine

  • post original content

  • celebrate other's success

  • spend some time on your title and your first sentences

  • be social and friendly

  • research tags - use popular and well-known tags

  • reply to all comments

  • If your writing is poor, use Grammarly to help you

  • read books, it will improve your writing

Screenshot_10.png

Don't:

  • ask for upvotes

  • self-promote unless it's actually relevant

  • troll or be rude

  • write stuff like "WOW, amazing post". Offer some value!

  • tag photography just because there's a photo in your post. Use relevant tags, otherwise, people will be disappointed

  • write clickbait titles

Hey @susanne, thanks for the tips! I’ve started with steemit only a few days back and really still learning every day! I really like it so far. To be honest I must admid I am guilty on some of the dont’s you’ve mentioned :s But on the upside I also apply some of your do’s! From now on i’ll try to stick with the do’s! Again thanks for the help!

Well, here you have my full upvote! Welcome to Steemit. I hope you'll like it here. Thanks for reading - I really appreciate it. Have a lovely evening.

So I went to the dentist for a regular check today. Turned out I had a cavity (the first one ever :S ). But woohoo! This made my day! Thanks a lot :D

Holy cow! That is one big upvote. Congrats @michelmake.and salute to @susanne. First time see so much goodness in a steemian for newbies.

Haha yes, I feel blessed :)

@susanne
WOW, amazing post.

Just kidding :-)
I am always looking for ways to improve my posts, thank you for giving these tips, I have also noticed that being authentic in your posts most certainly do improve the quality of your post, also guess your tags are most important as it does not help if you write something that is brilliant and the relevant audience does not get to see it.

I made/make the mistake also initially of placing hashtags and @'s at the bottom of my posts and that seemed to have made them less acceptable, I am still learning the proper etiquette - so if you notice me doing something stupid, please feel free to offer some advice.

thank you, stay blessed...

HAHAH! This made me laugh. You're funny. upvoted 100%

That's good. Improving your posts is always important.
Tags are really important, yes. Great post + crappy tags = disaster
Crappy post + great tags = disaster.
^
Thank you too! Have a lovely evening.

Hey Susanne.

Wowser!!! Is all I can say,
Thank you so much for the vote. this is the most I have ever got on an upvote. you are a star, truly appreciate it. May your journey continue with blessings :-)

Congratulations @susanne, what a great achievement to be here for all those months!! Haha, I love your banner so much! nice GIF!
You did sum up some obvious things one should try to do indeed! nice:)

I wanted to ask you, during these 20 months, what was the longest period you did not post on steemit? :) I ask since I do quite feel that steemit can also be a source of stress, always trying to post and keep up etc :)

Thanks a ton for your answer already!

t.

Thank you!! I think the longest I've gone without posting was two weeks. That hasn't happened often though.
I sometimes feel a bit stressed if I haven't posted in a while, but I can handle that now.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate your feedback!

I think this is an important conversation to have right:) Read about my opinion here
But I am happy that you have learnt how to cope with that sensation by yourself! :)
I wish you a lot of months more!

t.

I hit 7 months just 2 days ago and am thrilled for the next coming months on Steemit.
I just checked out the post on how to get people notice your notice.i need to just add more pics in my posts, other points i do apply well.

I guess commenting has been a problem for Steemit from back then...I have seen your rant on upvote beggars hahaha.
Congrats for the 20 months.

Congratulations on your seven months. You got my upvote!
That's great, pictures are really good for engagement.

Yes. I rant about that quite often. LOL. Thank you so much.

Thanks for the upvote and i also rant a lot about those generic comments.
To show how i hate those comments,i have gone on a ranting spree teaching people how to comment on my last 3 posts...yes 3 posts all talking about commenting!

These are really great tips you have given, not just to newbies and minnows, these tips hold the key to success on this platform

I am personally inspired by how far you have come, you have made a name for your self in less than 2 years

Congratulations on your 20th month, i also look forward to that moment also, and i will definitely give back to the community because of the love i have received, not just from big stars like you, but also from the least minnows, i have made new friends from different background and culture, i owe all that development to steemit

The tip of what to post will definitely come in handy for me, because i always struggle with the idea of how to catch my audience

what i learnt here in steemit!
It is about writing..
It is about reading..
It is about knowing people and their side of the story..
It is about learning..
It is about finding a path to follow..
It is about keeping yourself motivated to write better..
It is about broadening your thinking..
It is about spending your time productively..
It is about making you think from a different perspective..

Thank you. I agree with all of this. Learning and motivate yourself to write better is great points.

Your account was one of the very first accounts I saw when I joined Steemit October last year. Whenever I wanted to see tasty meals I usually head over.

Congratulations! 20 months on Steemit is a really long time. I'm just about 3 months old here, and I feel pretty old already.

What many newbies do not understand is that Steemit is actually a social media, and a social network requires interacting with other users. Let's make Steemit great!

That's so cool to hear. 3 months? You're basically a veteran then. Ha ha.
Thanks you so much, dude.

I agree. You have to be social and outgoing. Being curious is also a great skill here.

I'm really glad I met you. I still classify myself as a newbie though, since I still have a low SP. Thanks for the breakfast by the way.

It is great that you were patient last 20 months when steemit was going through rough times.

I am continually searching for approaches to enhance my posts, thank you for giving these tips, I have likewise seen that being valid in your posts assuredly do enhance the nature of your post, additionally figure your labels are most critical as it doesn't help on the off chance that you compose something that is splendid and the applicable gathering of people does not get the opportunity to see it.
I mate the error additionally at first of putting hashtags and @'s at the base of my presents and that appeared on have made them less adequate, I am as yet taking in the best possible decorum - so on the off chance that you see me accomplishing something inept, please don't hesitate to offer some exhortation.

much obliged to you, remain favored...

Upvote and resteemit done..😄😄😄😄
✌✌✌✌

Lool... Thanks for the advise @susanne
..Won't be forgetting them anytime soon
Though and still struggling with this: "spend some time on your title and your first sentences" ... Hopefully i improve soon!!!

I love your cap... Can i try it on? 😂

Happy Steeming

You're so welcome! That sounds good
Try to make your title simple, on point and catchy. Maybe your title can be a question? That usually sparks people's interest. Yes, you can. I love the hat.

Okay! Thanks for the reply.. I'll do just that :))
Hopefully I'll also learn a thing or two from the links you dropped.. Cheers!

Very nice..

@sussane, thanks for your contribution to the Steemit community and platform. I have enjoyed reading your travel posts.

You do a great job of combining a passion that exists in the "real world" and translating it onto the pages of Steemit.

Thank you so much! I always appreciate your replies. I'm glad you've liked the traveling.
That's a great compliment - thanks again.

Have a lovely evening!

only steem is reall .it is our future.good work in the artical

Thank you ver much. I also hope it's the future.

Yes since I started steemit, there is still a lot wrong with my post. I think every post that contains a tip from you or anyone, I must read it to improve the quality of posts. thank you for giving tip @susanne

I'm sure there is a lot right with your posts as well! Don't beat yourself down. At least you have the desire to improve. Thanks for reading. Keep up your work.

thanks once again for you my friend @susanne.

Iæm glad you got something out of this. Thank you for reading.

Thats amazing. I didnt even realize that this platform is about a year old. Congratulations :)
Good advises . You are absolutely right. It is very annoying to ask for upvotes. I think everyone has a lot to learn here. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks!! It's more than 2 years I think. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks.

thank you for sharing your very helpful knowledge in making good writing, this suggestion may be able to motivate all new users to make his work in steemit more quality, thanks a lot @susanne

You are so welcome. And thanks for leaving a reply. I appreciate it a lot.

thanks again comrades, i am happy to greet you

good luck, and lots of sustenance😅😄

Your advice is very useful, I had already looked for advice on the internet and everyone agrees with what you wrote in your post, but I really think that to make good use of this social network, not only do we have to follow these tips, we must also completely forget about it monetary interest. We must always keep in mind that the important thing of Steemit is to make friends and share stories, themes or experiences of their own that maybe for some members will be boring topics, yes, maybe; but there will also be other users who would feel identified with these themes and will also be of great help to them.

I agree. I feel like I've made some friends here. I also went for lunch with a Steemit member some weeks back. I absolutely love this community.

I'll try your tips and if they work I'll give you feed back

Yes, I'd love feedback from you. Best of luck with posting. Keep it up.

Thank you for this

You're welcome. Thanks for leaving a reply. I appreciate it.

That was very inspiring. Thank you.

Thank you @carolunstahl. And thanks for reading.

Don't want an upvote, just wanted to tell you that I remember your first post very well (wearing the same cap) as we started writing on steemit at the same time. When I Think of steemit I usually think of couple of people Here on the platform, including you :) At some point I had to give up on writing (I got pregnant and have a baby) but read your posts from time to time and felt a bit dissapointed that I quit writing. Now It's time for me to catch up , So wish me good luck😉 Cheers from Poland!

Very healthy tips... Thanks for sharing..
One point you made BE SOCIAL AND FRIENDLY.. I totally agree with you on this point.. Here people are more focused on how to earn rather than how to communicate and be social.. I think and it's my personal opinion that we should be focused on becoming social and if we do that, we will gain attention ultimately and then on the way we will earn too..
Thanks again for sharing and I hope that you have many many more years on Steemit.. Have a nice day..!!

Susanne, these are great tips. I really like the celebrate other's successes comment. Its not something we do enough in life. What are your thoughts on how to get more of the younger generation on steemit and posting useful info?

I'll admit i'm still new and trying to not adopt any bad habits. So starting from here...

We need more people like you on this platform, most persons don't even care to put the minnors through, the forget it's a community and we are all supposed to uplift each other. Thanks for sharing

Thank you alot @susanne indeed steemit has improved my writing skills and also i find myself reading a whole lot of novels, and learning how to phrase novel like phrase, de description and analysing parts, indeed its been amazing and i seek to learn more from this great platform....i can't remember the last time i visites other platforms, it takes a whole lot of my time and i have not regretted one bit of it...i will always and keep remaining a steemian.

I really appreciate the tips you shared with everyone especially us the minnows.... I gained some insight on you post.... Thanks

I just started steemit this week and meeting this post is like a miracle for me. I actually have challenges getting ideas of what to write on. Now i know that if i follow your guidelines, steemit will be an exciting place for me. Thank you Ma'am. You have bought me heart! I'm your fan!!!

I'm so happy i came across this post, this is the best guideline any newbie could ask for. I joined steemit late last year and i must say it had been a wonderful experience. Thank u for sharing this it will go a long way in my steemit journey

Hello at @susanne I really appreciate you for this post. I wouldn't lie I'm a fan of your don'ts but I've quite improved in the aspects, after reading this I know my next posts are going to be awesome and you'd love, I'd appreciate if you could visit my blog and help me with some necessary corrections thank you once again.

Okay for starters.... Thanks for this helpful tip.

But about Pposting original contents... To be honest, sometimes its so hard to keep up considering how you have to manage being online and doing your usual day job and chores at home..
It's draining...

My question...
At such points when you feel overwhelmed like you're having a writer's block.. How do you overcome such...

Because personally, when I get very stressed.. I just blank out like totally...

Tusen takk for gode råd.

Takk! :)

It's amazing @susanne that you think of giving back to your followers, it's simply amazing, you truly came for the community not for the reward

@susanne, thanks for this kind gesture.

@susanne thanks for this piece of advice

It's really helpful

thank you so much, I am just few days old on steemit but I am Learning a lot from people like you who share their important know how. Still learning though. Thanks once again

hi @susanne thank u for sharing this Wonderful tips.. i am also newbies. i don't really know about steemit but i am learning stiil.. I really appreciate your work and help... Keep sharing like this. u are doing great job thank you again

Thank you so much for your valauble tipps Susanne!
One of my new year's resolutions is to post on Steemit at least once a day, create original content, spread the messageof health on this platform and connect more with others.

WhenI started with Steemit, I saw it more like a side poject but I feel I've spent too much time in the old "new media" like facebook, instagram, etc. while people are writing history here. I decided that I want to write history together with you guys, so thanks for sharing your experiences and learnings with us ♥

Gratulerer med nesten to år her inne! Supert med gode råd og tips til en nybegynner! Synes du gjør en utrolig god jobb og er imponert over hva du har fått til! :)

Hi from Norway! :) good to see this post as I'm quite new here myself and keep trying different things to please my curiosity trying to figure out how it all works. I have basically landed on doing more photography, share my work and do what I can to inspire and help other people in here.

I can safely say that the Steemit community has helped me find inspiration to do photography again after more than two years away from it. Enjoy the small challenges that people put up in here and that you get positive feedback. Need to improve on the writing skills as you propose, practise makes perfect ;)

Thanks Susanne!

Great post! I am on month three and have been sensing my way around and trying to learn the particular etiquette of this platform. In my own search, I've come upon all of those key things as "the" key things as well. It is very encouraging to know that my instincts were leading me toward success! It is a very different experience to write things and have them read by others who like to write as well. I haven't had organic feedback this useful since I was in college. Thanks much for sharing what has made you successful on Steemit.

hello susanne law your publication really your advice is very important because many people go to steemit and do not know what to do and what he does wrong, for example only posts to earn money and you read them and you really it removes the desire to read. I am Venezuelan and I joined steemit a month ago, because my son @ malos10 was motivating me and taught me the tools to work here, we do community work, with the help we received from steemit and from a foundation that was created within steemit call @ youarehope, and I really like to make health travel publications and I will read the addresses you wrote there to have more ideas and try to improve them, thanks for your advice, to apologize as my language is Spanish I did not understand what you want say clickbait, you can explain to me that I guess it's an easy word but I did not understand it

Thanks for the tips and the links, they really help!
I've been actively using Steemit for about two months now and I think the most difficult part is the tags. One on side you want to use tags that are popular so you get more views, the other side is that these tags are overused and you don't get seen unless your following upvotes it first. Which is great when you are consistent in your topics, but not when your still experimenting. Time to pick some topics and do some more research :).

Hei, @susanne!

Mvh @valth

Wow, you've been here for 20 months, and I've been here for only 2 weeks, but I must admit that this site is a genuine platform to showcase your talent, meet new friends, earn unlimited knowledge earning is just the bonus factor to be honest. In my 2 weeks stay i can say that I am guilty doing the post a picture then tag photography. Because I am so entice to join photo contest. I also realized that helping others through your knowledge can really bring joy to your heart. And although I am just an aspiring Artist, i was moved and overwhelmed by the people who believed in my works. Yay! More journeys to come for all of us! And thank you for the tips 😂

I wonder every day if I am adding anything of quality here. There are so many wise and intelligent people on the Steemit train. I have learned so much these past few weeks. Such a huge pool of information available. Thanks for the information, and congratulations on your success.
