I got twenty pounds of Deer meat

in #life3 years ago

Ever since the first time I tried Venison I quickly became a big fan of it. Sometimes I get sausage, other time small cuts of it. But this was my first large serving of Deer I received. And I am really looking forward to trying it. Being wild game meat it has a unique flavor to it. Unlike farm raised animals, the Deer that was killed for this meat ate hundreds of different kinds of plants and because of that the meat is much more high quality in my opinion. Eating animals from the forest taste much better than farm raised, due to the diversity of their diet. And usually what they eat is higher quality than mass produced farm feed.

Really looking forward to doing some cooking posts on Hive using this meat. It could last us up to a few months, really curious how long we will be eating it all. Twenty pounds of Deer meat is a little less than half of a harvest of it. My friend took the rest and has already eaten alot of it.

My friend has had a very successful hunting season, nearly filling his tag limit. He got these Deer with his bow. So I was given some of the meat he harvested. He brought over a bag of it, each piece wrapped in foil and one of them vacuum sealed. It should be fine wrapped like this as long as no air gets in and causes freezer burn.

With a trash bag full of deer meat he laid it on my table, its a little more than 20 pounds if you include the bones in the weight. I am really thankful I have a friend that lets me have some of his harvest.

A cut of shawarma, its mostly the deer neck. It will make for a good soup. Recommended that you first sear it before putting it in for the soup so its fully cooked when all done.

Back straps, those can be made into a nice Deer steak. Cooked and then cut into pieces for a nice meal.

You can see how big these pieces are, each weighing a good five pounds or more.

Got some Deer butt too, this will make a nice Deer jerky. We made some a few weeks ago and did a post on it as a joint effort between @lovely.logic and myself. Will do another post when we make some jerky from this meat.

Lastly a leg of Deer, has alot of bone in it so probably best for a stew. So I have two kinds of meat I can use when I want to make a stew. Good eating for those cold weather days.

Loading up my freezer it feels good to have a bunch of meat. Especially game meat, as what the animal eats has a big impact on the meat. So eating some local Georgia Deer is the best. Hah we can see my big bag of Blueberries in the freezer as well, still have bunch from last years harvest. We also have a little peach butter left, should probably eat that up as I should have more soon.

Sort:

Deer meat is very lean so it is much healthier to eat than beef. We cook it in chili. Georgia is a good state for deer, however, as a precaution I never cut the spinal cord.

Yeah I agree, I think eating Deer is much better for you than eating farm animals.

Oh nice I think I have had some deer chili.

What about the spinal cord? Something to do with Chronic wasting disease?

Yes. the wasting disease can be spreads from the spinal cord fluid and the brain. So we usually don't cut the spinal cord. It's just a precaution because wasting disease is not in Georgia at least not to my knowledge.

Ah okay, figured it was something to do with CWD. Well I plan on cooking them real well to make sure I do not get anything the Deer had.

Will keep that in mind about the spinal cord.. thanks for telling me.

I'm mega jealous. Venison is one of my favorite meats and that looks to be quite the stock you have. Enjoy and be happy knowing you won't be starving anytime soon. I still have it on my bucket list to try elk eventually. I hear it is even better.

Hah man well make friends with hunters and before you know it they will have extra meat to give you.

Oh man yeah Elk is on my list too, yall got them in the wild on the West Virginia / Virginia boarder and into Kentucky. I am hoping when I buy a home in Virginia it will be in one of the Elk counties.

All of the hunters I've known (which is many) never have been that willing to share. Most I've gotten is deer jerky... which I'm grateful for bc that stuff is delicious.

Haha yeah I feel ya, it took me many years of asking before I got anything from hunters.

Wow... Awesome!!!
Nothing beats meat!

I beat meat

haha I thought the same thing, though was not brave enough to point it out :-D

That looks awesome! I'm really looking forward to being able to get out there and do some hunting one of these days. That stuff looks like it's going to go a pretty long way which is great!

thanks alot, and nice I hope you get something out in the woods.

Sure is, will last me a long time.

My brother-in-law is an avid bow hunter and used to drop off venison summer sausage and deer steaks a couple of times a year. I would marinate the steaks in red wine and Italian dressing overnight in the fridge then grill it on the bbq like any other steak. I like mine a nice medium, soooo good. Most people overcook venison. I love it all, chili, stew, jerky. If it's game, I'm in.

Nice, glad you get some too. I gotta try marinating them. My goto way of cooking them is usually low and slow. Crockpots are great for Deer meat I find.

Now I have a smoker I may give that a try as well, marinating them and then smoking them.

I have a Masterbuilt smoker and smoke all kinds of meats. I have found venison doesn't really turn out all that well in a smoker unless you are doing jerky. The meat just doesn't have any fat content so it comes out terribly dry. It would be like smoking a pork loin, it just doesn't work but for jerky yeah a smoker makes for great venison jerky. I'm with you on the crockpot thing, nothing better for chili and stew.

Oh good point about the meat being very lean. OK I will keep that in mind. I think we are going to try roasting some and see how it comes out. Also going to make some jerky.

Appreciate the tips on cooking!

Bro @solominer Do share some pics after you cook it. hehe

I do agree Vension is amazing. I had some earlier this year, a buddy of mine hunts ( unfortunately I do not) and he always gives me a ton of meat. My goto is deer steak and making deer chili.

Oh man, well nice you got a friend that hunts. Glad my friend does too and hooks me up with meat sometimes.

Yum, Deer chilli.

:) enjoy that! i can't even remember the last time I had venison. I know I liked it, tho. :P I know many bodybuilder/fighters/healthy people like Joe Rogan eat that.

For me its been about two years, my friend @makinstuff shared some of what he got with me when I visited him in Alabama.

Hehe yeah Joe Rogan is a big fan of wild game meat.
