I remember someone teaching me how to play Bull Shit card game and thought it was hysterical especially when you got to say B.S. out loud.
"Do you have a good B.S. detector? You need one in our digital age.
The skill of spotting false information—rubbish, nonsense and, yes, fake news—is so important these days that scientists have begun serious research on it. They’re attempting to quantify when and why people spread it, who is susceptible to it, and how people can confront it.
B.S. is a form of persuasion that aims to impress the listener while employing a blatant disregard for the truth, the researchers explained. It can involve language, statistics and charts and appears everywhere from politics to science.
B.S. is different than lying because liars know the truth and push it aside while B.S.ers don’t necessarily care about the truth at all.
Of course this isn’t new. But false information moves faster and farther these days, thanks to social media. A new study conducted by researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published earlier this month in the journal Science, analyzed the spread of 126,000 rumors tweeted by 3 million people over more than 10 years and found that false news spreads faster than truth. “We have reached epidemic levels of information pollution."
Website algorithms often favor salacious stories. (YouTube came under fire last month for the way its recommendation algorithm promotes conspiracy-theory videos aimed at viewers on both the left and the right.)
And millions of bots—computer programs that can appear to be real people—also spread false information across the internet.
When do people typically use B.S?
People tend to spread it when they feel obligated to have an opinion about something that they know little about—and when they feel they aren’t going to be challenged on it.
When are we most susceptible to believing B.S.?
When we’re tired, research shows.
But we are also more prone to believing misinformation when it comes from someone who shares our views.
Finally, we fall for B.S. more often when we fail to think analytically."

I so agree with you. I tell my grandkids that they must stop believing everything they read on social media because they get so hyped up. I say if it doesnt make sense it is probably BS
One thing I have tried to get in the habit of doing is to confirm the information. Especially if the quote a report like this article has. There are a lot of things that seem on the verge of BS that when I find a number of studies and reports backing I may still be wary of the content but believe it a bit more. That's one thing I see so many people do these days and why I moved away from Facebook. They would share something they like the idea of without doing any research to confirm it. And then regurgitate what the content was saying, to refute counterarguments, or use other commentors points who had agreeded with them in a manner that showed very little individual thought.
Fake news is a result of the content being created at scale, our constant thirst for new content and our pursuit of saving time. Mix these together and it is the perfect combination for fake news stories to get circulation.
Of course, people should be smart enough to do some further research but it's easy to see why people believe fake news, the amount of crazy things happening in the world/society makes any news headline sound believable.
My biggest pet hate in life are those pesky B S💩.Oh the amount of fake news on social media is blimmen ridiculous. In all fairness even the prime time news is full of BS do not get me started on the politicians. These days if you want to know real news one has to observe and research themselves to decipher the correct story. You have to be as sharp as sherlock.lol🕵.My very chaotic life is centered around my gorgeous gems.I do not have time for news no more. You prob get more accurate news on the old facebooklive😂.My philosophy, If you ignore it you cant fall for it!! Alas common sensicat will prevail😂👍🏼
I think it is just more important than ever to do as much research as you can before you take posts/blogs/videos as a fact. There is soooo much information today and it is hard to tell what info is correct or just BS. Research research research! :)
Hi @senseicat
I agree fake news is a problem but any person thinking that false news is only a problem in modern times has not done enough research.
The only reason it is becoming a problem is because enough people is waking up and following people that actually tell the truth and this group that has been dominating propaganda on TV feel they are not in control any longer.
Shout out to:
@highimpactflix
Truthstream Media
The health ranger
And many more that still publish information even tough this group is going above and beyond to censor them.
"Interesting...really they are now selling toupees for balding hamsters and they are on sale on QVC? Oh, yes..of course it's a thing, you saw it on the internet, I see." Hmm, can we make these B.S. meters? I have a few people I need to gift them to. Apparently natural selection isn't weeding them out quick enough ;)
Yeah man should invest BS detector because it seems that almost everything around the world now is BS.
I think the best coarse of action is to take all news as fake news until you can verify it through multiple sources. I think another form of fake news is completely biased news. If you present a story only from one point of view without telling the audience its fake news.
Very nice game bullshit.
Fake news is very common around the world so especially online. what can we do? As reader before you believe what ever writing online we should do some research. Like reading legit site. And we should also be responsible in sharing the unverified news. If your not sure that is real then dont share it.. It will help to minimize the fake news.....Always remember "Think Before You Click"

You are absolutely right about having a BS detector @senseicat. Nowadays it's more important than ever to be critical about everything we read, see and hear. Viral titles and viral news are often fake and not backed-up by anything. I find this especially alarming when it comes to health issues, treatments and remedies. Good post.
