Why do mosquitoes buzz in the ears?

First of all, it must be said that the mosquitoes that buzz in our ears are exclusively female mosquitoes. It is the females that need to feed on human blood to acquire certain essential proteins, which allow them to incubate their eggs and these are fertile. They can also feed on the blood of other mammals.

For this reason, mosquito females have been equipped with a proboscis, which is the thin tube used to pierce the skin of the mammal and suck blood, a process in which the mosquito introduces a kind of saliva to facilitate the passage of the blood and that is what causes the known itching after the bite of the insect.

It should be noted that mosquitoes are usually very dangerous insects in some geographical areas, since they can function as vectors transmitting diseases. In addition, many scientists believe that it would be possible to eliminate all mosquitoes on the planet without causing significant ecological consequences.

Female mosquitoes have certain natural mechanisms that allow them to detect their possible objective when looking for a mammal that provides the blood they need. In its head and antennas, mainly, are located certain sensory receptors that allow the mosquito to go to the most propitious places to suck the blood.

Some of the signs that the mosquito follows before it bites are body heat, humidity and carbon dioxide emissions. All these factors, during a summer night, for example, gather around our head. Above all, the carbon dioxide emissions we exhale when breathing.

That is why mosquitoes, in search of a good area to land to draw blood, often go around our head. The mosquito's buzzing is nothing other than the sound of its thin wings as it beats rapidly during flight. And that annoying sound is what usually reveals us.
