Difference between need and greed
The title itself is an explanation of what I am about to write.
Need and greed.
What is a need?
Food, shelter, and clothing are all needs. One cannot do without these. Good food maintains the body. Nutritious food makes sure that the body is healthy. Clothing, according to the place, is necessary to protect it. Shelter is necessary to give security.
The basic needs include the top three. Other common needs are basic education, education in human values, knowledge of skilled work to make a living, societal inclusion, financial independence, entertainment, and so on.
When the basic needs are met, a person is generally happy. If he or she starts comparing himself with people who live a luxurious lifestyle, then the journey to unhappiness starts, and need transforms into greed.
Greed is caused because of jealousy which in turn leads to immoral practices like bribes, unethical practices to extract money, and unscrupulous means to earn money. When one starts to do this, all sense of morality leaves the person and he or she becomes more evil. Dishonesty becomes part of their personality and they are marked in society as such a person unless they reform and end ways.
More money and the need to keep on increasing wealth also increase crime. In the holy Bhagavatham, it is written that kali yuga will witness an increasing number of crimes and that evil will be present where there are wine, women, gambling, and gold. Name one place that has all - You are right - the casino.
Have you noticed that such places do not have windows at all? It is so to make you not realize that time has elapsed. This has been pointed out in the Percy Jackson movie where the trio enter a lotus casino and forget about the time. They come to their senses when they realize that the people who are playing came there decades ago.
I am not saying that you should not desire wealth but it should not make you less of a human. It is ok to desire for a better lifestyle. A comfortable life that does not leave you wondering when the next meal will be.
Life is a challenge indeed. Always think before making the choice.
