Nowadays it’s usual that everyone pursues a college degree. So, for about 3-5 years, students enroll in courses and exams and studying, hoping that one day it will pay off. It’s rather debatable if it always pays off or not, but, when you finish a University course you’ll always want to…

Yes, to celebrate!
And in Portugal, students take celebrations very seriously, so, for one week, there won’t be classes or study going on – only celebration!
This week occurs in the beginning of May and has lots of different activities, but the most important one is a music-festival-like-party that endures for the whole week, at night.
The second most important activity is this event that I bring to you today: the Students’ Parade – Cortejo da Queima das Fitas.

On a specific day of the week (in Porto, it happens on Tuesday), every school of the university – public or private – will bring its own car, surrounded by students and filled with joy, excitement and… Beer.

The cars parade through the most emblematic avenue of Porto: Avenida dos Aliados.

The traffic stops, people come to see and even the mayor of the city of Porto is present for this celebration!

So, remember: next year, in May, visit Porto and take part of this massive students’ celebration! 😉
