A Roof in One Day

When it landed in my inbox, the message was in Spanish.

I had written to tell my favorite Tico builder that the materials we ordered had been delivered. This was late on Friday afternoon. His reply was to ask if we could start tomorrow, which was Saturday.

Stunned, I said something to the effect of: "this makes me so happy I am doing a Snoopy dance." Because I never expected him to be available on such short notice. He's very good at what he does. Quite in-demand. I figured I would have to wait a few weeks before he could get to this. But tomorrow? Yeah, some Snoopy dancing happened.

And boy-oh-boy, when he arrived this morning with his father Salomon, they got right down to business. They had the old roof off within an hour and the new one going up within two. By the end of the day, the entire roof of the barn had been replaced and they did an outstanding job of it. I am so pleased!

Here are some pics of today's construction adventure in the jungle.

The first step was to get all that old, rotten metal out of the way.

They worked for a while on the crossbeams to support the laminated panels, then started the process of attaching them.

They worked so fast that I didn't even have time to warn Nano about the rotten floor in the back corner of the barn. He'd already fallen through it before I realized they had finished with the front section and moved on to the rear.

Repairing this floor will be a project for another day, since it's not just the floor that's the issue. The supports underneath it are bad, too, and must be replaced. But at least it's under a solid roof now and will not continue to deteriorate.

The end result of today's hard work is absolutely phenomenal! It looks like a brand new barn.

This project is part of the nonprofit work I'm doing in Costa Rica. The farm I share with @michelios, Manor Miravalles, is a dedicated animal sanctuary that is pending 501c3 in the U.S. and affiliated with several nonprofit associations here in Costa Rica. I won't be using Hive to fundraise but I'll certainly be sharing updates about the sanctuary here. If you're interested in getting more involved with this project, please check out my Facebook page. It is set to public so I can share our progress with the world, so you should be able to see all of the posts and links to contribute fiat if you'd like to do so. I'd love to connect with you across multiple platforms, so if you send a friend request, let me know in the comments on this post that you've done it. That way I'll know to accept.

Pura vida!
