I actually had quite a nice XMAS this year... starting in Wales and now in London, it's been all good!
Xmas on the farm...
I did something I've never done before which is take up the offer of an Xmas invite - and old friend of mine's partner's parents work a 38 acre farm in West Wales, and I couldn't resist that!
It was great - just basically food, friends and lounging around. They keep cows and so we had some of their own home-reared beef on Xmas day, and I helped out with the feeding Xmas day morning - it's all hand-done, well, with the help of a tractor for moving the hay bails.
The farm is idyllic... cows, sheep, a working corgi dog, neurotic cat and ducks...
Then a 9 hour drive to London day after boxing day....
The least fun aspect of the holiday was the mammoth drive to London to stay with a friend....
This was storm day, it rained the whole journey and I was about an hour ahead of the mental weather all the way... behind me in Wales it was trees down and flooding and blocked roads, had I left an hour later I may not have got anywhere.
And it was a day in which pretty much anyone with a car had jumped in it to travel, so BUSY, busy the whole journey.
London of course was the worst... at one junction the SatNav said 10 miles to go and 1 hour 6 minutes... I could have just about run the final leg quicker than driving!
But anyway, 9 hours later I arrived and it's just been more beer, food, lounging, all good!
We took a trip to Crystal Palace park yesterday, wandered around the old site of the Great Exhibition... never been, but what a waste of an area...
All that's left is these....some terracota Sphinxes, bizarre!
Today is the first time in a week I've managed to get a bit of time to myself and am just enjoying catching up on a few Hive things before heading back to Hereford for the New Year and then back into work on the 2nd.
Overall a top Xmas 2023!
In the 1850s it was a miracle for the whole world. Today, world exhibitions are no longer so interesting.
It's still quite the spectacle!
I was at the last World Expo in Dubai in 2022. I didn't like the pavilions of most countries. I was hoping to see scientific achievements there and not plastic models of countries' attractions. And I was very tired of walking, since there were no self-moving sidewalks like in Paris in 1900 :)
Sounds exhausting!
Thats quite a contrast , rural Wales and then London! I hope you have a good NYE!
Hey yes I did, in the local pub, just catching up with all things Hive now, and Happy New Year to you too!
Sounds like an idyllic getaway. Good for you! Happy New Year, my friend! :)
Hey cheers, got a bit behind with replying, had a great break, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I've never experienced spending Christmas on a farm, but you made it sound so fun that I wanted to, man. After 2023, I hope 2024 will be perfect for you. Happy new year!
Hey cheers, I had a blast, just catching up with Hive now, Happy New Year to you too!
No problem at all man :)
9 hours, I think the most I have drive is 6, the contrast between the countryside and the city is awesome, I would not resist neither to spend xmas on a farm, nature sound, animals, wind, smell, eveything is diff and better, the silence, I hate the city noise and smell, hope during summer can go out the city, happy new year ✌️
It was a great break, driving worth it, Happy New Year!
Happy new year @revisesociology !
I can relate to the idealistic journey at your old friend of your partner parent's, there is nothing more energizing then connecting with nature and some manual work :)
I simply love this part:
I wonder why you named the cat has neurotic... Ahahah Aren't all cats neurotic somehow? Ahahah I love that thing about them :P
Hey cheers, I had a great break, I think it is a thing with cats, just this one especially so!
Cheers!
Have a good one. The travelling can be a pain. We're in Northumberland to see friends. The drive was not too bad, but the weather was crap.
Crikey, up there I can imagine.... seasonal I guess!
We had some nice days up there. It was really busy by the sea with even some brave souls kayaking or surfing. I came back on Monday on the train to rain at home.
One would switch off in this idyllic farm.
It was a really nice, chill break for sure!
A day away from the hustle and bustle and spend in a quiet place with healthy food! Who can resist?
There are some people who usually think the best way to celebrate Xmas is by going out but that’s wrong. Spending this Xmas on the farm is lovely and I love the fact that there was enough food for you
