Deals aren't always better value than bulk buys...and merry XMAS!

in #life13 days ago

So I was in le supermarche the other day looking to buy some mini quorn sausages, the three year old here loves them....

And lucky us they were on special, at least the smaller packets were....

Oh and MERRY XMAS, I SAVED THIS ESPECIALLY FOR TODAY!

For some reason I just wanted a very NON XMAS post up!
20251106_104526.jpg

Time for some fun with math....

  • £3.50 for 28 sausages (14 times 2)

compared to

  • £2.95 for 24 sausages.

HMMM NOT immediately obvious to work out what is cheaper.

Time for a calculator...

  • that's £0.125 per sausage with 'the deal

and

  • £0.123 pwe sausage with the regular price on the larger pack.

DAMN!

Interim conclusion

Not so lucky us......

NB I still bought the two mini packets as it's worth paying that tiny tiny bit extra to keep them fresher for longer, one has to ration these things...

Lessons learned...

It's worth pausing BRIEFLY and using a calculator and being careful to not get sucked in by special offers.

What annoys me about this is that it's just another example of you having to be on your guard when out in public spaces, literally the same item more or less right next to the special is BETTER VALUE...

One can be aware of NOT buying stuff you usually wouldn't when it's on special, but being duped into paying more than you could usually by special offers, that's a new one on me!

Hot damn it's a crazy and mildly unpleasant world out there sometimes!

Hmmm..

Postcript...

I'm probably having a great XMAS, this was scheduled at it'd be rude to get online today!

Sort:

Have you gotten a vacuum sealer?
They are great for individually packing jumbo quantities into freshness preserving small packages!

Also, with the right meat slicers (bit knives, electric knives) You can take those BIG, and less expensive roasts and turn them into steaks. (and other yummy bits)

In our place, sachet of shampoo and coffee are much cheaper than bottle of shampoo/coffee . Bulk buy cost more.

Doesn't surprise me at all. I notice such things for awhile now. Such trickery is right up there with shrinkflation. There is a bulk store some hours away from me. It's next to some bigger well known grocery giants. As the name indicates it only sells in bulk. The store gets enough business from those none the wiser but if one were to do the math its almost always cheaper or the same price to purchase regular servings at the standard grocery store.

I like to point out to some who like to shop at this small bulk "saving" store that the building is small and there at most is just a few people in there at any given moment. That should set off red flags that you might not be getting the deal you think you are. What boggles my mind the most is the people I did the math for still going there regardless of me pointing out they are spending more for less. I chaulk it up to people hate being wrong and rather spend the few extra dollars than admit they suck at math.

In the case of your purchase. As you noted keeping them fresher in the small package is worth the small increase in-price. Convenience is what consumers pay the most for. You got yours at the premium price of £0.002 per sausage. 2L of pop routinely cost the same as a 355ml. Can't beat the convince of holding that 355ml bottle over chugging on a 2L.
