The other day I needed to make some clay mask and hair spray for a customer and had brewed up a tea from my special blend of garden herbs that I use for making my shampoo, clay mask, and soaps. I decided to also try it as the base for the hair spray while I was at it. Well, I ended up with a lot of extra and thought it would be a good idea to also try it as a hair wash just on its own to see how it would work.
I was very pleased with the outcome but I also know that it can take several uses to get a better idea on how well such things work long term.
Anyone that has been following me for awhile on my other platforms will know I love using my homemade vinegar as my "shampoo" more than anything. However, I am always experimenting and love finding the easiest, healthiest and most frugal ways to make or do something. As a result, I made the choice today to make a much larger batch of the herbal tea to find out if it would still work just as well after a couple weeks worth of washings.
Here is a photo of my special blend of organic homegrown herbs including lavender flowers, calendula, sage, nasturtium flowers, thyme, rosemary, marshmallow flowers and leaves, borage, pansy flowers, and dandelion flowers
I took two cups of the dried herbs, one gallon of filtered rain water, and heated them all in a big pot on my hotplate run off our own solar power.
I then let it steep for about an hour or so and let it cool. I proceeded to filter out the herbs, putting some of the tea in a one liter bottle that I will keep next to the tub, and the rest in a half gallon mason jar. I do have to say, the mix smells wonderful as is, no need for added essential oils. Looking forward to seeing how well this will work on my hair over the next two to three weeks.
EDIT: I forgot when writing this was that I also added in about a half cup of homemade colloidal silver to prevent the tea from spoiling
I hope you enjoyed this post and may consider giving something like this a try and letting me know how it works for you and I will likely post an update down the road to this so keep watching for that :D
I'm interested in finding out how this works for you.
We ordered some hypo-allergenic conditioner for our teenage daughter just this morning. Her skin breaks out wherever her hair comes in contact with it. Changing to a hypo allergenic shampoo hasn't solved the problem.
So far, I am finding it best to still follow up with my homemade vinegar (I dilute it about 1 part vinegar to 3 or 4 parts water in a squirt bottle to apply to my hair). I do like the smell and the over all result, but after washing with it a couple of days, it seemed to leave a residue that made my hair feel dirty, so next time I did a follow up with the vinegar and it was much better. I think next time, I will just use all these same herbs and make a vinegar out of them.
I'm not sure if my teenage daughter would allow vinegar near her hair. ;-)
Haha, well, I will say that the homemade herbal and fruit vinegars smell way better than the store bought stuff and once the hair is dry, the only scent it leaves behind is whatever fruit, flower, or herb was used in it.
I'll have to check, do you have any recipes on your blog?
Not yet, but I will soon, I will be making a video of me starting up my first batch for 2017 of my floral vinegar. I will also write a blog to go with it. I am just waiting for my lavender and roses to bloom. :)
Thank you! Awesome! Followed
Thank you!
I am so thankful Heidi that you do try different ways to do things. It saves me time and money. Can hardly wait to see if it works. ❤
