  2. Immediately clean up water or any form of liquid that has spilled and messed up the floor.
  3. Cook at a low flame or temperature when using gas cooker and electric cooker, because it is the best way to prevent fire outbreak.
  4. Keep clothes and kitchen towels away from the stove.
  5. Leave enough counter surface free upon which to rest a boiling pot.
  6. If you use gas, ask that the gas company perform regular checks on it before you will refilled the cylinder.
  7. After you are done cooking, take your time to make sure that everything is off.

In the Bedroom

  1. Install light switch at a point which you will be able to reach from your bed.
  2. Make sure that the bed is at the right height, not too low and not too high for you.
  3. Check over the phone cable and the lamb cable that are run along the wall and not on the floor.
  4. Keep heaters away from curtains and bedspreads.
  5. Avoid the use of electric blankets and pillows.
  6. Keep a phone near to your bed. Many emergency calls are made from the bedroom and this connection may save your life.

Family, friends and neighbours can help the old ones, making sure that the right safety measures are in place. With the right safety measures in place. With the right measures put in place, the elderly ones can maintain a good measure of autonomy and responsibility. The secret is not in doing everything for the retirees so that they can be left idle doing nothing. Instead, the retiree should be entrusted with areas of responsibility and care in order to provide motivation. This will help the person to continue to feel useful and to live a meaningful life. The attitude towards retirement age is important, as we all have elderly ones at home. Our feelings towards them are noticeable and affect their mental and physical health. In fact, it may influence their longevity. Our attitude towards the old ones may reduce or increases their days on earth. This is very important to family and friends of the elderly including neighbours, health professionals and the media. The way we treat them will determine how best they will live and enjoy their rest of their days on earth.

Mental capacity in the old age tends to decrease when not used. We must insist on the adaptive ability of the brain and its functions. When mental activity is regularly exercised, the brain maintains its functions and neurons remain alive.

This is necessary to maintain mental capacity in good condition during advanced age. Nevertheless, diseases such as Alzheimer’s do affect the elderly. Alzheimer’s disease, normally associated to old age but often latent during previous years, increasingly affects more person and their respective families, who suffer from the results that the disease has upon the patient.
There are few useful tips to this disease:

  1. Speak calmly to the patient and do not despair because they do not use logic
  2. Place on the elderly some identifying label in case he/she get lost.
  3. Offer opportunities for the elderly to talk about the remote past.
  4. Encourage safe activities that were liked by the patient in the past.
  5. When there are fears, reasoning and explanations do not work. The source of the fear must be removed and the elderly distracted.

Care of elderly and retirees is very importance to their longevity, and also determine how best they will enjoy life at old age while they are still breathing. Make sure you look over your seniors at home for proper care.
