Truth is, no matter how the guy is dressed, you definitely can tell the boss by the way he behaves. So probably your British John was much smarter than he made others think and figured out that the only guy who behaved like he didn't give a damn was the boss :) You don't have to be a regular at such meetings to know that drivers wait outside...
