Tianeptine - The Only Antidepressant?

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Hello again Steemians!

My most recent post was my favorite one to write so far, and by far the most well received within the community. I used a bit of knowledge I had acquired, and ended up saving my grandmother. Her condition is still improving at a rapid pace. Had she continued taking her trial antidepressant prescribed by her doctor, she would have just begun to become acclimated to it, not providing near the same results. I know this because I have my own experience with the traditional antidepressants the doctors eagerly prescribe, and many many similar stories from people I have encountered.

I wish to share more in-depth information regarding one of the compounds that I offered to her. I feel like there was much left unsaid regarding this compound that could very well serve to aid more of you in your own battles. I hope to arm you with an additional option. Tianeptine.

What is Tianeptine?

Tianeptine, sold under the brand names Stablon and Coaxil among others, is an atypical antidepressant which is used >mainly in the treatment of major depressive disorder, although it may also be used to treat anxiety, asthma, and >irritable bowel syndrome.[1][2][3] In terms of chemical structure, it is technically a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA), but it >has a very different drug profile than other TCAs, and is not usually grouped with them.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

Tianeptine has antidepressant and anxiolytic effects[14] with a relative lack of sedative, anticholinergic, and >cardiovascular side effects.[5][12] It has been found to act as an atypical agonist of the μ-opioid receptor with clinically >negligible effects on the δ- and κ-opioid receptors.[15] μ-Opioid receptor agonists typically induce euphoria, and in >accordance, tianeptine does so at high doses well above the normal therapeutic range.[16]

Tianeptine was discovered and patented by the French Society of Medical Research in the 1960s. Currently, tianeptine > is approved in France and manufactured and marketed by Laboratories Servier SA; it is also marketed in a number of >other European countries under the trade name Coaxil as well as in Asia (including Singapore) and Latin America as >Stablon and Tatinol but it is not available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, or the U.S.[13][17]

Essentially, it is a well documented antidepressant drug. Marketed in the EU (European-Union) as Stablon or Coaxil by prescription, tianeptine is a powerful antidepressant. It is sold as a Nootropic drug on various websites in the USA. It is not regula

One of it's most interesting aspects I find to be how available and how effective it is in treating depression. Specifically, Major depressive disorder.

It is actually the ONLY antidepressant that is so effective short term, that it is called a recreational anti-depressant. It is a selective serotonin reuptake enhancer. It is a tricyclic antidepressant that has a mechanism of action that is different altogether from the other antidepressants.

It acts on the Glutamate receptor in the brain. At clinical doses (12.5mg) it can provide positive results in 2 days time.

Tianeptine comes in a variety of forms, each with slightly different properties.

  • Tianeptine Sodium

    1. This is the most common of them. Basically, a tianeptine molecule attached to a salt (NaCL) molecule.
    2. Clinical dose: 12.5mg
    3. Active life: 2-4 hours (longer for elderly)
  • Tianeptine Sulfate

    1. 2nd most popular form. Tianeptine + sulphur.
    2. Clinical dose: 25mg.
    3. Active life: 4-8 hours longer for elderly)

There is also a 3rd form. I left it out for the purposes of keeping this information simple. The sodium and sulfate versions are trusted and have more data surrounding its use. All of these will prove quite effective at providing more readily available serotonin, a neurotransmitter hormone used by the brain.

How is it Different?

For starters this is not a chemical you can only find with a prescription. It is not a controlled substance, and it does not have the side effects you would typically expect to find possible by most or all of the commonly prescribed alternatives. It is cheaper in terms of cost and risks to health.

It tends to provide positive results much faster than expected from traditional antidepressants. There is a reasonably wide margin of safety, making over-consumption by accident relatively improbable. It is not physically or mentally addictive at clinical doses. For example, the clinical dose is 12.5 milligrams, yet side effects are not near common until you exceed 100mg.

It does not create a dependency, even though it has "potential for abuse". At clinical doses, when a user decides to stop, they should not experience withdrawal symptoms. However, if more than 100 mg is taken for an extended period the user can expect withdrawal symptoms similar to those caused by some analgesic pain killers. Tianeptine can feel to the users taking doses in excess of 100mg very similar to an opioid pain reliever. This is because it will bind to the -mu receptors in your gut at these doses, possibly also causing constipation. There is limited research indicative of slight liver toxicity. Too much of anything isn't good.

Tianeptine is very underrated. Perhaps the sulphate version, which still categorizes as Research Chemical, is more effective but presents higher risks of having issues like insomnia. It's amazing how well this compounds perform but it's also sad how some people can end up abusing it due to its astonishing effectiveness; ending up taking as much as 10 times the suggested dosages for the recreational power of its opioid agonism. And then people start dying and the drug is blamed.

Sorry, went a bit on a slight rant. Overall it's great. Great improvement that i hope psychiatry will pick up more often over the slightly more powerful than placebos SSRIs and so on and so forth.

Nice having you with us @peacefulpatriot ! Just got to know you but, through my follow, hope to discover more of you in the future 😋

Thank you for the comment! Its comments like yours that make me fall in love with this community all over again. All i hear is crickets on fb when i try and talk about anything interesting. I followed you as well. Looking forward to more from you!

Excellent post, very explanatory.
Never heard of it before though......well I'm not depressed, but I'll stick it in the back of my mind maybe someday it can help somebody.

It is also a nootropic. It has many uses. It can be used as a supplement to prevent cognitive decline. My next post will be on another of these amazing substances. You do not need to be depressed to take them. However tianaptine will be the most effective for folks in need of a proper mood boost. Thank you for reading! ☮
