A KETOGENIC DIET MAKES YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY - wanna be a cryptomillionaire? start fueling your brain with ketone bodies

in #life7 years ago

I'm just going to put this out there

The Ketogenic diet was originally developed to help children with epilepsy (nearly 100 years ago). The basic theory is that reducing sugars in the diet and allowing the brain to burn fat instead, works as an effective treatment to reduce seizures. It was effective. I think it would be really difficult for a child to sustain a keto diet. (It's pretty hardcore for an adult.) Anti-convulsive drugs came along and the diet became less well known or practiced.

The Low Carb Revolution

As the western world's health began to plummet has under obesity, cancers and diabetic conditions, an interest in low carbohydrate diets blossomed. Paleo, Atkins, Keto and the original Weightwatchers are all low carb. Atkins developed a high protein, high fat diet, similar to keto to help mortally obese people lose weight. It was a short term, drastic measure which worked. It's now been refined and is not really a diet as such, but more of a lifestyle choice. New Atkins, New You is a popular book which is full of case histories of former, obese people who continue on a low carb intake and has lots of recipes. (don't be fooled by coconut, almond pancakes though). They aren't really anything like wheatflour pancakes. I've always been a fan of edamame. We're now firmly best friends. There is a pasta equivalent made from 100% soyabean. It's 40% protein and less than 15% carbs. They taste like egg noodle and cook in 4 mins. you need half the amount as of spaghetti.

Medical Reasons

There are many reasons to go on a keto or low carb diet. I was asked by my doctor to cut out all sugars as a way to help my immune system. I also lost 30lbs in the process. I wasn't obese but I now look and feel like I did ten years ago, which is a bonus. My Physician who is a top specialist has been on atkins for over 12 years. He maintains a keto style 20-30 grms carb intake per day. He is fit as a fiddle and he has 5 kids. He doesn't go to the gym but he looks like he does and he is in his 50's. So what's all this got to do with the title ?

Thinking Patterns

It was really difficult at first. Week 1 no carbs. I was quite ill already. I then had a week of photo-phobic migraine. I literally couldn't get out of bed and could hardly eat anything. Apparently this is normal and the withdrawal from many years of being addicted to carbs. After that I was one a strict diet of meat, eggs, veg, nuts. Very simple and I was hungry all the time. I was literally eating jars of olives and bottles of olive oil, having bacon and eggs for breakfast and whole cabbages by the bagfull. I was eating superfood salads like I'd never imagined and actually enjoying it. I stopped missing potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, biscuits, pastry, sweet fruit, pizzas, Chinese and Indian takeaways. My thinking began to change. I also learned how to make cabbage as a replacement for pasta and rice and also how to make curry without onions. That's difficult. (onions were excluded for a different reason to do with digestion.) I relied on chewing a block of creamed coconut which stopped me from losing too much weight. It's full or lauric acid, which is a potent antiviral antibiotic (saturated fat). I may have eaten a lot of fat this year, but I am always hungry and my cholesterol is exactly where it should be.

Living Like a Monk

I was also not allowed any artificial sweeteners or stimulants so no caffeine or alcohol. My world (and skin) became very clear. I had changed my relationship with food from fun to fuel. I had undergone ketosis. My brain was now being fueled by ketone bodies which my liver was making from the stores of fat which I had accumulated over the years. My ideas about life began to change with it. It also directly coincided with my interest in crypto.

I am a different person. I am living a different life. It happened at a good time for me. I see the rest of my life through a different lens. I can now eat a small amount of carbs each day and my body still primarily burns fuel. I do need to eat regularly. eating out is tricky and it's not all fun. I have found things which work for me which might not work for others. It's been conducted under medical supervision. I have had to take supplements in addition to my diet. I still think differently. My goals are different and my interests have moved from the romantic to the analytic. I still have poetry an music in my life. I still write them both but my relationship with them seems more objective. I'm not necessarily a better person, but it feels like my decision making is more consistent, authentic perhaps. I firmly believe the changes in my body have been reflected in my brain. I am faster, more agile mentally. The sugar fog has lifted. I have also had a bumper year with crypto. I have worked with crypto clients, become a BlockChain evangelist, Steemit advocate and let's just say I've developed a feel for altcoin projects and their objectives. (I've backed some serious winners.)

The Year Ahead

In 2018 if you want to be healthy and you have no medical conditions to consider, I would recommend you cutting down your carb intake to 50-74 grms per day. It will no doubt help with all age related conditions. Leave the carbs for the kids. Drink lots of water, eat tons of green veg and high quality protein and fats. Olive oil, coconut oil and nut oils are optimum.

Hi @outerground! You have received 0.1 SBD tip + 0.02 SBD @tipU from @dswigle :)

Check out new tipuvote! feature :)

I have actually started this diet because one of my kids did. The no sugar, no carb (or low carbs) really appealed to him and he is doing great on it. He has lost 30 pounds and is back to his high school weight, He looks fabulous and feels great.

His doctor is elated with it. I am not as good as him, but, I am back on track tomorrow with the holidays over. I have found recipes that work well and I love cabbage anyway!

Win-win Good luck!!!!! tip!

hey thanks @dswigle. that's great news to hear about your son. 30lbs is a life changing amount of weight and the side benefits to detox and how the brain is fueled are probably not fully understood or appreciated.

Cabbage is one of the keys. A high protein diet needs a lot of fibre to balance it out and WATER intake has to go up by at least 1 litre per day. A lot of people ignore this and it puts a lot of strain on the kidneys which are processing more protein than usual !

the holidays are hard.. but if you can make it into part of your routine a few days off the bandwagon aren't too bad :)

I totally look forward to it! Happy New Year!! The name is Denise. ;)

(I'm going to write a bit more about keto, next week. it seems people resonate with it and I have been on quite a journey with it )

I have to make the sad confession that I've kinda stopped caring about my food intake over the last months... I am totally sugar addicted (again)...

thanks for this inspiring kick in the butt... my mind needs cleansing!

it's really difficult @fraenk. It's like nicotine or alcohol or any other substance which short circuits our pleasure-reward centres. Except food keeps us alive ! so it's no surprise that we are engaged in a constant battle to make healthier food choices. The food system is heavily stacked in favour of the bad stuff. It's composed of the killer combination; vegetable oil, wheat flour, sugar & salt. Delicious if combined in the right quantities and cheap to make attractive to the tastebuds ! keto is not for the faint hearted (literally) and I wouldn't recommend it without medical supervision.

there's a great story from the 1700's (can't remember where I read this) but it was long before nutrition was even a topic. A certain bright doctor had an overweight patient who just couldn't lose weight. The doctor suggested one less spoon of potato and one more of sausage with each meal. Apocryphal and badly paraphrased from a second hand source (you know me) but it seems it was an early adoption of the low carb diet.

Best of luck with it in 2018. savoy cabbage and edamame pasta alternative are excellent helpers !

This was really inspiring. A few months back I just cut sugar out and have not looked back. It makes things easier to really eat simpler and less, so that leaves more time for creation and art. I'm following now too by the way, I found you on another post where you thoughtfully linked some free photoshop smoke brushes.

hi @donnadavisart. glad you found it useful. I guess we weren't really built for eating sugar ! we're still hunter gatherer people really and although we've been eating bread for the last 5-10,000 years, we managed without it for the million before, when we ate whatever we could catch or find. which was mainly root veg, fish, meat, nuts and berries..

can't wait to try out the smoke brush !
I'm going to follow you :)

(I'm going to write a bit more about keto, next week. it seems people resonate with it and I have been on quite a journey with it )

I'll look forward to it!

I follow a ketosis diet when I am dieting for contests. I do suffer from the lack of energy due to zero carb, however I am stable and muscle loss is minimal.

it's quite drastic for the body. my doc recommended doing it and sticking with it for as long as poss. every time you dip in and out you place quite a strain on the body. especially when you stop eating carbs. it usually takes at least a week to adjust. the weakness with zero carbs can be helped by eating a lot of oil rich food. healthy fats are best. This helps. also having some protein rich snacks on hand are really useful. walnuts are a good option :)

In my experience, ketosis state hits within 72 hour. With high consumption of fats and fatty oils, the body will start to use the fat as an energy source and the tell-tale sign of this happening in breath and taste in mouth. Walnuts were a godsend, as well as natural peanut butter. Protein source was chicken and salmon (salmon has a ton of fatty acids).

The switch can be difficult, but again, for me, the mental part was hard...as I do love carbs!

we all love carbs. the cravings got so intense for me at one point it felt like my organs were starving. cutting down on carbs for everyone is a good thing and I've told my overweight friends.. if you want to lose half a stone in a week or two, stop eating carbs. this is mostly due to the fluid retention which is immediately lost due to no longer being of benefit to the body !! Best of Luck in 2018. my other tip is keep away from sweeteners, they trick the brain (in a bad way) ! PEANUT BUTTER WITH NO SUGAR IS NITRO

Impressive diet during the last year and it seems it has paid off for you immeasurably - I am going to print out this post and dissect it further with your regime and see if I can try something very similar... Thanks for the info and sharing this brother!!

my pleasure entirely. As mentioned it's probably a good idea to conduct it under medical supervision. If you have an underlying health issue (which you may not be aware of) it can be detrimental for health. otherwise, it's a hardcore but very interesting approach to nutrition ! Best of Luck me ald china :)

  • me ald china / my old china = china plate (mate) cockney rhyming slang.. developed many years ago as street speak in order for criminal types to speak in code unbeknown to the local constable !

Hmmmm... Interesting about the conducting it under medical supervision.. I may or may not have a health condition I'm not aware of but don't have the resources for the medical supervision so maybe I'll just roll the dice, not go as hardcore at first and just listen to my body.. I haven't been sick in over 8 years now - knock on wood - even with a simple cold or cough - not sure why exactly...

I like the me ald china - you are seriously full of interesting information brother!! Now i gotta go research it further :)

(I'm going to write a bit more about keto, next week. it seems people resonate with it and I have been on quite a journey with it )

YES please do - just an idea but maybe you can make it into a little series or story-line combo

Could be beneficial to your followers and yourself and the Stemmiverse
