Yes the steemit is not 100% functioning ,i my self i don't know why but there have been alternative where you can login to do your normal stuff on steemit like busy.org and the latest one is the one posted by @surpassinggoogle called steemitstage.com this two can help you login your account and i bet you your passward is safe
