Life out of the fast lane

in #life7 years ago

I have been sitting for a few days now trying to articulate how best to write this. There will be many who read it and completely disagree and maybe many who agree too. Whichever way it swings does not really make too much of a difference, its just something to ponder over.

I am struggling to comprehend people lately. I know its a common thing that some of us have often, human beings do things and act in the strangest of ways. What I am struggling to understand though is the following, happiness. People talk about wanting to be happy, trying to be happy. To not feel so down and depressed. From a bit of chatting to co-workers and others, I think I may have found the reason this just doesn't work for them.

Drama is more addictive than happiness.

Why are the most popular movies and television shows all dramas of some sort? We have medical dramas, crime dramas, romantic dramas. There is sadness, loss, infidelity, anger, violence etc thrown into these shows people are drawn to. Reality TV (an absolute joke in my mind) is the same thing, supposedly real life captured (completely controlled) for us to see how people react in situations. Younger generations may not be caught in the TV show aspect of things too much, however gaming doesnt exactly lend itself to being a happy environment. Now please dont think I am one of those people saying video games create madmen and shooters and such, I am not. I am simply stating my view that these things dont make for a happy outlook on things.

Then we move on to work life. We spend so much of our lives at work, stressed out, sticking to deadlines, working late, weekends and such. What happens to our families, our friends? They have to take the sideline and wait for you. When we do get home, chances are that the work follows you there. You are tired, STILL stressed out and end up in front of a media device of some sort and in seeps the drama some more.

Why not watch a comedy show instead? Not pathetic slapstick, toilet attempt at humor, the last people to get that right were Monty Python. Why not listen to music? Why not grab a drink or move your meal outside if the weather is good to enjoy it? Why constantly be bombarded by negativity when there are simple ways to avoid it?

Take a walk, go play mini golf, learn to fish! Get out of life for a while. Most importantly, just laugh, as much and as often as you can.

As much as drama may be more addictive than happiness, happiness feels better.

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away, well in this case, a friend made my day start with a laugh with this picture.
