The film is a reasonably faithful adaptation of the novel, and some of its variations are improvements. No one has the right to think that their opinion is any more valid than the next person’s opinion. People talk nonsense all the time, but it’s only an opinion, not a fact and they have a right to it. Just as you have the right to ignore their opinion.
