Today's quote is by Lucille Ball,
“I have an everyday religion that works for me. Love yourself first, and everything else falls into line.”
I think if you ask someone if they love themselves, a big majority will say that for the most part they do. The reality though is that many people only love the ideas, the images that they have of who they think they are. These images are very precious to us. They give us a sense of identity. If I have an image of myself of being an honest hardworking person, and someone comes along and says that I’m a lazy lier, I will feel attacked, I will feel threatened. But what in me feels threatened? What is it in me that reacts? It’s the conceptual image itself and my identification with it. But is that image really who I am? The problem is that most people have a case of mistaken identity, we’re in love with our false personality. Only what is false feels the need to defend itself, to fight for its survival. What’s true doesn’t need to prove anything.
