इस विपुल तथा विचित्र सृष्टि में कोई भी प्राणी ऐसा नहीं है जो सुख एवं शांति का कामना न करता हो । सृष्टि का कोई ओर छोर-नहीं, इसी प्रकार प्राणी भी अनन्त हैं और वे सभी एक आंतरिक प्रेरणा के अनुसार परम सुख एवं शांति की प्राप्ति की ओर अग्रसर रहते हैं । छोटे से छोटा कृमि कीट भी सुख और आनन्द की अभिलाषा रखता है ।

किन्तु प्रश्न एक ही रहता है कि सुख क्या है ? सुख कहां है ? शांति कहां निवास करती है ? आनन्द की परिभाषा क्या है ? आत्मा का वह शुद्ध रूप स्वरूप कौन-सा है जिसे प्राप्त कर लेने पर जीव ऐसी परम सिद्धि की स्थिति को प्राप्त कर लेता है जहाँ भव-भव का भ्रमण चक्र समाप्त हो जाता है तथा चिरन्तन चिदानन्द की अनुभूति होती है ।

युग-युगांतर व्यतीत होते चले जाते है । काल-चक्र अबाध गति से आगे बढ़ता जाता है । सृष्टि में अनन्त प्राणी आनन्द स्वरूप धारण कर प्रकट होते हैं और विलीन होते चले जाते हैं । यह क्रम न कभी रुका है और न कभी रुकेगा । अनेक ज्ञानी, ऋषिमुनि, तपस्वी, संत मुनि, विद्वान्, पण्डित, भक्त एवं दार्शनिक जन्म लेते हैं – विचार एवं साधना करते हैं तथा अपने अमूल्य ज्ञान के भण्डार को विश्व की कल्याण-कामना करते हुए इसी भूतल पर अपनी अमूल्य विरासत के रूप में छोड़ जाते हैं ।

क्या हम ऐसी अदभुत और अमूल्य ज्ञान की विरासत का सदुपयोग करते हैं ? यह मूल प्रश्न है । यदि हम उन परम आत्माओं के अक्षय ज्ञान-कोष का समुचित सदुपयोग नहीं करते तो हम मनुष्य जन्म धारण करते हुए भी मानव कहलाने के अधिकारी नहीं हैं ।

प्रत्येक प्राणी इस संसार में सुख और शांति चाहता है । सुख सदा बाह्य वस्तुओं और बाह्य परिस्थितियों पर निर्भ्रर होता है । इन्द्रियों की क्षणिक तृप्ति द्वारा सुख प्राप्त होता है, आनन्द नहीं । सुख और आनन्द में बहुत अन्तर है ।

आनन्द सुख से बिल्कुल भिन्न है । वह हमारी आत्मा का स्वरूप है, यह किसी बाह्य वस्तु या परिस्थिति पर निर्भर नहीं है, वह हमारे भीतर ही प्रतिष्ठित है । आध्यात्मिक व्यक्ति में आनन्द की उपस्थिति के कारण जो प्रेम उत्पन्न होता है वह दूसरों को अपना आनन्द वितरित करने के लिए प्रेरित करता है इसीलिए वह किसी को भी दु:खी नहीं देख सकता । सुख और शांति को प्राप्त करने का मार्ग प्रत्येक प्राणी नहीं जानता । सृष्टि के अनन्त जीवों में मानव ही श्रेष्ठतम जीव है । अत: मानव से यह अपेक्षा की जाती है कि वह सत्य और असत्य का विवेक करे तथा उचित मार्ग पर स्वयं अग्रसर होता हुआ अन्य प्राणियों को भी उस मार्ग पर आगे बढ़ने की प्रेरणा दे ।

अनन्त सुख और अखण्ड शांति का राज मार्ग है, तो एकमात्र ! प्रेम ।

मनुष्य की आशा में प्रेम से अधिक मूल्यवान और कोई शब्द नहीं है क्योंकि प्रेम ही प्रभु है । इस पार्थिव संसार में यदि कुछ अपार्थिव है तो प्रेम ही है । मानव इतिहास भी इसका साक्षी है कि जीवन में जो कुछ भी श्रेष्ठ और सुंदर है उसका जन्म सदा प्रेम से ही होता है । यही एक सेतु है जो हमें दूसरों से सम्बद्ध करता है और व्यक्ति को समष्टि का अंग बना देता है ।

विश्व के अनेक विचारकों अथवा ज्ञानियों के परमात्म स्थिति तक पहुंचने के लिए अनेक मार्ग बताए हैं । ऊपर की दृष्टि से देखने पर ये मार्ग भिन्न-भिन्न दिखाई देते हैं और कभी-कभी एक-दुसरे के विपरीत भी, परन्तु विवेकपूर्ण आंतरिक दृष्टि से यदि विचार किया जाए तो प्रतीत होगा कि प्रत्येक महान आत्मा ने प्रेममय जीवन की ओर ही वास्तविक संकेत किया है । भगवान महावीर अनन्त प्रेममय जीवन के ज्वलंत प्रतिक थे । साक्षात् मृत्यु का कराल रूप ग्रहण कर आते हुए चाहे भयंकर विषधर चण्डकौशिक हो, चाहे कानों में तप्त और तीक्ष्ण कीलें ठोक देने वाले ग्वाल हों अथवा परम ज्ञानी गौतम हों, भगवान के ह्रदय में सभी के लिए अखण्ड प्रेम की वही अजस्त्र अबाधित धारा प्रवाहित होती रहती थी ।
