I am going that with the hints described from the various steemfest takes that there are changes coming soon. They might not half this nonsense but will continue in the grand march to a better product

I am a big supporter of consistency too!
But seriously i actually encountered more often than not - people either do not have an account on steemit.chat or most of those who do, have their user names there not matching their Steemit account and even their names are different! That is why i was advocating to have an official direct messaging ability on Steemit, just like any other social platform.
