How to help a struggling friend

in #life7 years ago

You probs check in with your friends on a daily basis, but saying "what's up?" in the group chat isn't always going to get the most honest answer out of your BFF (especially if they're struggling). Below you can find some very interesting ideas to help your friends who have a hard time...

Balancing everything that comes your way — school, work, relationships — can be really stressful. Many people get overwhelmed and anxious, so it can be hard to tell if a friend is just dealing with everyday stresses or struggling with a bigger problem. Your friend might need professional help to manage their stress, feel better about themselves, or to help with issues like depression, eating disorders, or anxiety. It's never your responsibility to take care of a friend, but being supportive and encouraging them to seek help can make a huge difference.

Remember: You aren't a therapist, so you don't have to worry about 'fixing' the problem. If you are worried about a friend, the best thing you can do is encourage them to talk to someone or get help. If your friend won't speak up on their own, sometimes you have to tell a parent, boss, or counselor at school.

We all go through hard times. Sometimes people see asking for help as a sign of weakness, so you can comfort your friend by giving them an example of a time you or someone you know struggled and needed support.

You can feel better. Your friend may feel hopeless or like no one can understand or help them, so it's important to make them see that reaching out for support is the first step to feeling better.

It's OK to ask for help. Remember, that our backgrounds and experiences can have a huge impact on how we view asking for help. Some people may come from families where speaking up about a problem or seeing a mental health professional is thought of as weak. Thinking about why a friend might not want to get help can be important in deciding how to suggest they reach out for support.
