Discover the Blackberry, Heroic Superfood!

in #life7 years ago

Where I live, deep in the redwoods, the blackberry has taken over large areas, consuming everything around it. It is infamously known as an invasive.
I don't see many people harvesting them, and they are wonderfully sweet. Perhaps its a false idea of where our food comes from. This idea that the food in grocery stores is cleaner, healthier and safer. In reality living near a large berry farming community, most of the berry's are grown on the side of highways. But I challenge you reader, if you live in a place where berries ripen in the rays, (and haven't gotten sprayed) to tip-toe around the needles and thorns, and carefully pick the juicy, sweet fruit. And see if you can taste the sun and enjoy these health benefits.

I have my favorite Blackberry patch a block down the road, tucked away in a meadow. I find foraging to be a relaxing way to supplement my garden or the grocery's I buy each week. It gives you a connection with the ecosystem you are living in, and at it's most humble gives you appreciation for the weeds.

And in a time when the hot summer sun is drying everything out, most things are bolting or not quite mature, the blackberry is a juicy reprieve. But it's sweetness is just the beginning of understanding these amazing fruit. The health benefits are impressively abundant, health studies research shows they are one of the top cancer fighting fruits . And even though you have to carefully pick each berry one at a time to avoid a whip-lashing of thorns, what the berries offer make it more than worth it.

One cup of blackberries contains 1/3 of your daily fiber, both soluble and insoluble. It is loaded with vitamins A,E,K and B as well as antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin which destroy free radicals and fight cancer with ruthless vigor. These heroic little fruit don't stop there. They have some of the highest levels of ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) that help you stay young and fight chronic diseases and cancer. They also contain minerals like copper, manganese, potassium, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, niacin and folic acid. Upon further examination we find high levels of phenolic flavonoids phyochemicals like ellagic acid, anthocyanins (are the reason blackberries are a dark shade of purple), tannin, gallic acid, pelargonidins, quercetin, cyanidins, kaemferol, catechins, and salicylic acid. All of these antioxidants compounds protect against inflammation, cancer, neurological diseases and aging. Amazing!

Just a warning, these fruit are full of sugar so watch how much you consume or risk a bellyache!

Thank you Steem friends! So excited to be here with you sharing ideas and building community.

Big Love, Katie

I love blackberries. Every time I'm somewhere and I see a patch of these, I can't help but pick a few to eat, and take some home. I'm not sure how humans became the all authoritative species to decide what's "invasive" or not. I wonder what other flora and fauna of the world think of us?

You have my Upvote. We will Resteem this for our followers and share on our FB page.

Thank you! I wonder how many present natives we have were invasive in the lands history. Thank you so much for the support, I am really excited to start in this community.

Lovely. These are more commonly known as brambles in Scotland.

Brambles is a very poetic name, thanks for reading my post and I hope you get a chance to pick some this year.

Nice post :) There is a big bush on the way to the gym, I always eat a lot, I love them :)

Thank you @mrzoltan, nice job on eating wild food and working out. Hope your enjoying a beautiful summer day.

First of all, those pictures are fantastic. Secondly, great info. I love blackberries. I didn't know they are so wonderfully healthy.

Thank you @happpymoneyman! I love blackberries too, and was really happy to learn how great are for my health as well. Have a wonderful day!

I followed you.

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to being on Steemit.

Everything in moderation! Also - Be very wary of where you pick your blackberries from... In UK especially, there is a tendency to pick them from hedges and roadside bushes. This can prove detremental!
Not only do the bushes accumillate roadside exhaust emissions, but pick them from a hedge next to a farmers crop field and you could be risking a pesticidal concentrated berry. This is due to the year on year effect of exposure to the adjacent pesticide spraying. Just be wary! DO NOT eat them next to a crop field, you could be eating a ROUND-UP cocktail!
I always get mine from either the woods or hedgerows next to grazing pasture land....
An excellent source of summer 'booty' and free! Great article man!

Good point, I'm lucky to live in an area that doesn't spray and there is not much traffic. As always observe before picking! Have a great day!

This is a really nice article - understandable and informative. I appreciate the effort that it took to provide such a well presented post. Just one teenie-weenie critique, if you don't mind. It's "groceries" ... not "grocery's".

Carry on.

Thank you for the kind words and the spelling correction. Spelling has long been my biggest challenge in writing. I hope through regular practice on steemit to progress. Have a great day and thanks for reading!

SWEET!!! Literally!! :) I just did a post about a fond memory of making blackberry jam as a child. If you'd like to read it, you can find it here:https://steemit.com/writing/@sylviategan/musing-on-an-august-day-day-2.

Blackberry jam is one of my childhood favorites! Thank you so much for the post!

I could eat these all day and never get enough 😀

Me too! I have eaten myself sick and my teeth blue and quite a few occasions. Thanks for reading!
