I use a similar tactic with negative thoughts and emotions where I reason with them & make a point to always come out on top. If something starts pervading my consciousness with negativity, I'll ask ask myself "is that really true" or "does it have to be that way" and I find it gives me power over them.
Sometimes even things like "that's not even my problem" or "That's not important anymore, so I don't need to think about that" for those times when I find myself reliving past events that had a negative impact.
