8+ AWESOME TV Shows To Watch In 2018

I’m a TV show binge watcher. The description of a perfect evening for me is a comfy sofa, a pack of Doritos or popcorn and a good TV show. I put together a list of 8+ series I’ve watched and recommend. Let’s get started.

The 100

If you like post-apocalyptic, science, drama, war and fiction – all in one – you will probably like watching The 100. Long story short, this TV show tells the story about a world 97 years after a nuclear war destroyed civilizations on Earth. A group of Humans living in a spaceship outside the planet decide to send 100 young prisoners to Earth, to see if the planet is inhabitable. When they land on the ground, all sorts of things happen and, as you might expect, I don’t want to spoil it! (insert hand over month smile)

In my opinion, the first episodes were not as good as the rest of the TV show. If you think the first 2-3 episodes are not the best, don’t worry, I promise it gets better! I got so obsessed with this TV show I started dreaming about it (yes, I’m one of those!).

Another post society destruction, action, drama, Sci-Fi TV show. This thriller is set in a collapsed society, where most people are very underprivileged, having little access to water and basic necessities. Only 3% of people get the chance to go to a better place, known as the Offshore. Through the episodes, we see the progress of a group of Youngers in the competition, all the dark sides of society and flaws.

As a Brazilian that lives in Portugal, I’m proud to say this is an original Brazilian TV show (though it has a dubbed English version). There’s only 1 season at the moment, but the 2nd season is scheduled to be released on the April 27th of this year. Just like The 100, the first episode are not the best, but I swear its gets so much better!

Dark

I think you can see a pattern here, another Science Fiction Drama... Dark, as the name mentions, is a rather dark Netflix original TV Show. The story is set in a small fictional Town, where children start disappearing. The families look into their own ways of trying to find them, exposing their dark pasts, broken relationships and mysteries.

An interesting part is that we see how the characters grow over time. The rest is spoiler, so I’m stopping here! It’s the first German language Netflix Original TV Show and, in my point of view, it’s a very remarkable one. Some people say it’s similar to Stranger Things, so if you enjoyed Stranger Things, you might like this one too. There’s only 1 season out there but a second season was announced with a short teaser, though there’s no time frame confirmed.

Sherlock

This one must be one of my all times favorites. Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes from classic fiction books. This mystery, crime and drama series is a modern version of the known quirky British detective. It’s set in 21st Century London, in a modest apartment where Sherlock Holmes lives and solves crimes with the help of his partner, Doctor John Watson.

I love Benedict Cumberbatch in the skin of Sherlock, bringing comedy, weirdness and uniqueness to this iconic character. I personally enjoy crime solving shows and movies so you can see why this is one of my favorites. There’re 4 seasons available, though I didn’t love season 4. The first 3 seasons are definitely worth watching, if you’re a detective, crime solver like me!

Manhunt: Unabomber

Based on a True Story, this crime and drama miniseries tells the story of the FBI’s hunt of Unabomber, a deadly terrorist that creates bombs himself and sends them to people in the mail.

If you like true story and crime based shows, you will probably like this one. It’s surprising and scary how this story actually happened. It definitely gets you thinking about a lot of different things in the end, including society and technology.

Travelers

Such a surprise! Another futuristic/apocalyptical related series. “Travelers” is a Sci-Fi drama that tells the story of Humans that came from the future. Yes. Hundreds of years from now, in a high tech developed world, humanity is coming to an end. In that future, people’s consciousness is being sent to the past, 'overwriting' other people in the 21st century. The mission is to change the past, in hope that humanity can be saved in the future.

This one is not as dark as the previous ones, but very captivating to keep you thrilled. There’re 3 seasons available, with the 3rd season active and being broadcasted on Netflix.

The OA

The OA is a fictional mystery from Netflix original series. It features the story of Praire, a young woman that was previously blind who returns home after being missing seven years ago. Praire can now see and calls herself “The OA”. Throughout the season she explains the journey that lead her home and supernatural events that happened whilst she was missing...

This is a very intriguing one. While the first episodes might not be the most catching, the following episodes will spark your curiosity and probably persuade you to keep watching “just one more” even at 3 in the morning. There’s 1 season available right now, but a second season is confirmed.

Altered Carbon

Altered Carbon is a thriller, Sci-Fi drama. No way, another future one – this is getting a bit repetitive. It’s a series set in a futuristic world, where consciousness can be stored digitally and loaded up in a new body. Pretty cool, huh? The main character is a prisoner that returns to life in a new body to solve a crime/murder in exchange for his freedom.

If you enjoy movies & visuals like Blade Runner, you will probably like this one. Being honest, I still didn’t watch all the episodes yet, but I have great recommendations about this one. Oh, and it has 8.3 on IMDb, which is a good sign.

Stranger Things

Last but not least. I left it out of the “8 TV Shows to Watch in 2018” because it’s surely the most popular/known fantasy series from the latest years so chances are that you probably watched it already.

If you didn’t watch it yet, Stranger Things is set in the 1980s in a fictional town called Hawkins. Finally, a TV show set in the past! It starts off with a story about a kid, Will Byers, that disappears and finds himself in a supernatural reality, the “Upside Down”. His mother, friends and the town’s police will go on an adventure to find him. Meanwhile, other strange things happen in the Department of Energy of the National Laboratory, where a kid with supernatural powers can be found.

I’m normally sceptical about hits and “mainstream” series and movies, so I wasn’t sure about if I would like it or not. I have to admit has a really good plot and season 2 made me into a fan. Netflix confirmed its Season 3, although there’s no announcement on any dates.
