Drugs Have Taken An Old Friend And The Feelings Still Can't Seem To Process

in #life7 years ago

As I get home from work minutes ago, I received a message that an old friend of mine passed yesterday evening. I still can't seem to register the reality of it all...

Drugs have taken many lives, and has left many with hollow hearts. Hollow hearts because they have to come to terms with the fact that their loved ones have fallen victims to these miscellaneous drugs.

Even though I haven't spoken to this individual in almost a year, it does NOT change the fact that it has made an impact on me. I know many who are still victims to the numbing power of their choice of drug, and unfortunately when I have tried to help, the help was refused.

I have come to accept the fact that you can not help an addict no matter how hard you try or what route you take to help them overcome their need for drugs. It is something they must desire with an unyielding desire.

As I write this I am taken back to those days we would hang out, and laugh together. The days where Heroin was unknown to us. The days where drinking was the only drug we put in our system, and even then being at that age, it was new to us. Where the burn from the alcohol was enough to turn you away along with the smell of liquor.

I have posted poems from great up and coming poets who have shared with the world their feelings, and thoughts on drugs, and the affect it has had on them. I search for stories, poems like that because it is an serious issue in the WORLD, and spreading the word is a start to tackling the problem.

I believe that most addicts seek that very potent drug that brings them close to their death because it seems like it's the best high for them. I can't seem to understand the desire for it, and I never will.

My friend whose name will remain unknown has left four children behind whom are all girls. She was a single mother. When I would come across a few of her posts on social media I didn't want to be too hasty in my thoughts from the way her looks have changed. I should have taken those moments, and reached out, but I did not.

I am sorry ....

I pray for a solution to those who suffer from addiction, and I hope love, and compassion comes back to the circle of our lives...

R.I.P old friend.

Sort:

Really painful subject but important ..
Most of the reasons for the spread of drug
Excessive freedom of children
And lack of awareness of teenagers how dangerous it is
The worst is the corruption of the drug control system from the top of the pyramid

Rip to your friend Joseph. Am always glued to your post. I like u a lot

Am so sorry, take heart my friend

Really sorry to hear this. No matter how long you haven't talked it is always difficult to hear someone that you knew leaving the world too early.

I've had a few friends suffer the same fate. The best thing you can do is do your best to save the ones treading the line now with drug use...even then only they can truly help themselves.

Sorry for the loss buddy, i just wish she was rehabilitated in time, it takes so much time and struggle to save an addict.
Unfortunately, we always don't give so much attention until it's too late.
This post has taught me to atleast give these people some attention more especially when their appearances start changing.

My condolences!
I think that drug problem has a lot to do with war on drugs and mislabeling. Common misconception is that all of the drugs are equally dangerous. So after trying something completely harmless like marijuana, it's only logic to ask what else is there. And without proper educating on this matter, you might just try something powerful like heroin or meth. Once you got the taste of that power, you are trapped and getting out is super-hard.
I like the Bernie Sanders take on this matter. The law is where we should start, it is very misleading as it is. And how can the education be accurate and helpful if the law is wrong and misleading?

It's heartbreaking- I did a lecture on drugs for a course in my university and after researching it I found that unfortunately you are right - one can't really get rid of the drug craving - a user will always have structures in his brain that changed in a way he will always want it. Even if he manages to withdraw, some event - the sight of the drug, a smell, a situation - can ignite it back fiercely.

I am really sorry for your friend and I can understand how it hurts you even though you did not speak for a year. I have friends close to my heart that I didn't speak to for a year or so but if we meet it will be like we never separated. It is that kind of friendship.

Thanks for sharing, I send you my condolences.

Sorry for your loss. Apparently the US Attorney General is more worried about other, relatively harmless, substances rather than the one that really needs some attention - opiates. Hopefully those suffering from addiction will be able to find more readily available help in the near future. Until it's treated like the disease it is, and not (just) a crime, things won't change.

There should be a way for steemit to have dedicated expert groups volunteering their time reach out to those who are abused or dealing with addiction. I hope it evolves to become a beacon of hope for those needing help.

thanks for shere this article i like it @joseph

rip to your friend, i have my addictions and everyday i pray tor freedom

I am very sorry to hear about your loss :/

sorry for your loss. Drugs abuse really kill many people and broke the hearts of their loved ones. Its like the road not taken once someone is addicted to drugs. There is so little we can do to help addicts if they dun want to help themselves. Hope everyone can stay aways from drug abuse.

very sorry about your friend..yes we should all try to save our loved ones from this menace..

So sorry to hear about your friend. There was a time in our city when heroin and meth weren't around, but now people I knew from high school seem to be dropping left and right. Very scary stuff.

Woah! Such a strong issue. Sorry for your friend.

I know how hard can be watching a good friend destroying himself/herself with drug adiction... They cannot be saved if they don't let us help them... They need to realize that they have a problem and accept help.

Sadly, in many ocations, they don't accept any help.

Touching post. Thanks for sharing.

I'm very sorry, but this is really how it works: usually you can't help anyone, not just an addict, if he or she are not willing to help themselves. Otherwise whatever you do - it's useless or even is made to look like harm.. So, the willingness to help oneself comes first, and only then the help of others could be counted on top.

Be brave and safe, my condolences.

Hi, I'm following you, and I gave you my vote for a witness. I hope to have your vote in my publications

Life is like driving a car to reach our final destination. Your friend has chosen the wrong road to reach his. Condolences to him and his family. May the Lord look into the good will that he has done through his entire life than judge him through his wrongdoing. RIP.

joseph sorry for the loss of your friend, ,

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It can be extremely difficult to know how to help your loved ones. If the person is not willing to quit, you just can't help them.

your posts are hitting pretty deep. i just come from your addiction poem that was more than just touching. its not always easy when reality trys to hold your hand..

im deeply sad. there are problems in our society. big problems. lets we all try to contribute anything that we can to be part of solutions. anything.

Are you talking to the poster? I am a little confused. Care to explain?
