There are a few truths about passwords that we all know:
- We should never, EVER, use the same password for multiple sites
- We should ALWAYS include random numbers and letters to make the password more secure
- We should never incorporate words or numbers that are easy to guess, such as the dog's name or your birthday
- We should never write them down
I understand all of the above but I also know that, with the increasing number of websites / apps that I need to log in to, I was struggling to maintain the discipline of all of those points all the time. Until now.
The easy way to remember your passwords is to assign each letter of the alphabet to a different character on your keyboard in a way that makes sense to you. For example:
A = 1 (because A1 is just something I personally find easy to remember)
B= T (because I am British and BT is short for British Telecom who supply our landline service in the UK)
C = 3 (C3PO #ClosetStarWarsFan)
And so on throughout the alphabet. Each person will have a different way to remember a letter so it is unlikely that anyone will have exactly the same symbols assigned to all 26 letters of the alphabet.
Then the password for each and every site that you need to log in to will simply be the name of the site but in your special code.
Take the example above. If I wanted to log into cab.co.uk my password would be 31T. If the password is too short (as that one probably is) you just need to think of your own protocol for that situation. eg, do it twice or put your name in front
You might think, what a hassle having to assign a new symbol to each letter of the alphabet but think about it...I bet you have more than 26 different sites that you sign in to. Your bank (sometimes more than one), your utility suppliers, your social media sites, your emails, your shopping accounts, online streaming services etc etc etc And, I bet that for at least some of those sites, you are using the same password.
In my opinion, it's a lot easier to remember an alternative to each letter, than to remember many, many different passwords. And it's safer.
