I think they want your money, not to kill you. If they kill too many non-mexicans, tourists, etc., it would hurt their bribery scheme. You're worth more alive, than dead lol. That's just my guess based on some stories I've heard.

That's exactly it. Why would they chase off people who give them money? It's a bit of a rule here, don't fuck with the cash flow. They try anyway some times but telling them sternly no thank you and no pesos lol
