Jacob Goes Off Grid Day 47 Part 1

in #life6 years ago

This is a video from Day 47 of going off-grid. I went 'off grid' five hundred and eighty-three days ago and it has been quite the journey since I got dropped off at this old fallow farm and built (continue to build) all my own infrastructure. I have been video documenting the entire process and have just recently begun publicly sharing some of the videos. I have been sharing the videos privately since I started the entire process which I call Jacob Goes Off Grid In The Woods. 'Day 1' is the morning after I arrived at this little place in the mountains in the 'dead of winter' on January thirteenth of two thousand and seventeen with my dogs, my wits, minimal gear and very little hard currency to work with. Slowly I have done my best to breathe life into a very old farm and give it all my best, 'learning as I go', and documenting the process as best I can. It has been quite the journey so far. @jacobpeacock

I have encoded this video to 320p to help make it easier to upload over my intermittent and throttled cellphone connection.

I make this video in the morning as I am drinking my first cup of coffee. I show where I am testing my outdoor 'cooking stove' and explain some of it's mechanics and how ideally I will cook on it when I have a good coal bank to work with to give it consistent heat. I talk about how I am experimenting with the design of the stove.

I talk some about cooking a few days before and how after only a few days of doing so I heard mice and started finding mouse droppings after previously not having either of those things occur.

I talk about having to gather cooking wood and how it needs to be specific kinds of wood that I use for it. I talk about it creating a whole new task for myself of having to gather those specific kinds of wood for cooking. I talk some about the difference between what I burn in the 'fire cave' and what I burn in the cooking stove.

I talk about cleaning out the ash from the cooking stove and my ideas for doing so.

I talk about using a 'pump pot' as my water faucet and how it makes things a lot easier in regards to my water needs.

I again talk about my love of coffee and my long-term use of it.

I talk about not wanting to burn a hole in the thin metal of my coffee peculator and explain how I plan on preventing that from occurring. As a side note it actually worked really well.

I talk some about looking for mushroom logs and logs that might potentially grow mushrooms. I also talk about the various other resources I can gather when I am pulling apart the piles of timber left by the loggers.

As always this is just a summary of the video's content and not meant to explain everything that I cover in the video.

Cool man, I have always wanted to do something like this.

It was rough in the beginning. I am still doing it but I have myself setup rather well these days. :)
