Yesterday I celebrated the new year at Puerto del Sol, Madrid, Spain. My goals, making a selfie for my social media, taking some pictures for Steemit and of course having a great time. You see my pictures of the celebration here: https://steemit.com/spanish/@holanda/fin-de-ano-en-el-puerto-del-sol-madrid-2018
This is the story behind the photos and the selfie on my social media.
In order not to miss the party, I left my hotel early. When I arrived at Puerto del Sol it turned out to be closed to the public. Probably because Spain has the necessary experience with terrorism there were many security measures. In my country the Netherlands everyone would try to get to the square as soon as possible. Not in Spain, the many thousands of people stood correctly in line. This was quite a strange experience.
Around 10:00 p.m. the square was opened to the public. I had to pass two police barriers and was checked from top to bottom three times. I had to pass two police barriers and was checked from top to bottom three times.
Of course I was one of the first people to enter the party. :)
It was freezing cold and there was almost more police than party people on the square. Police helicopters circling in the sky. Actually it looked more like a police state than a nice party. But as the square became full, this was less noticeable.
Obviously, there was a lot of mainstream media to create the hype. These were all broadcasting from the building opposite the place where the spectacle would take place.
There was nothing to do but wait in the square. Only one small bar was open and here it was too busy to have a chance to eat or drink something. Strangely enough, no food and drinks were sold on the street. In my country they know how to earn a lot of money with such an event. But not in Spain, a missed opportunity.
Because of the cold and the absence of toilets almost every corner in the square quickly changed into a public toilet. For the cleaner of the metro station and for ladies this was a big problem. Also a missed opportunity, rent a number of mobile toilets and charge like one euro. You make a nice profit and don't have a piss river on the square.
And than finally new year. Ice cold watching less than two minutes of fireworks and thats it. But far more important my selfie for the social media. :)
Happy New Year!
