Nailing Interviews

in #life7 years ago

Everyone tells me that I am really good at interviews and that I should give them some advices.
I decided to write down things that I do in an interview to get the jobs that I really want.

1. I relax and I try to be myself

This one I would say it's the most important one. Some people try to be like a robot or something similar to that.
Well.. Unless you are really bad at what you're applying for, you don't need to pretend you are something you are not.

I normally go to an interview the same way I would go to work: Jeans, T-shirt, Hat.
The thing is, if you know you are good, they will know that too. They want someone to do a good job, not a model (unless you are applying for some modelling job)

Do you like to work using a tie and a suit? go with that then.. do you like working on t-shirt? go with that. do you like working naked? well.. pornhub maybe?

2. Be original

That will sound weird. In my first job, I told the interviewer (and partner of the company) that I was a genius. They laughed like crazy and they asked me:
"Why makes you a genius?"
and I said the only thing a fan of Naruto would say:
"Some people are born with talent, and some other people need to put a lot of effort to master something. I am both."
They were like:

That was something they were not expecting and after getting hired, they told me it was because of that. They told me they never heard someone saying something like that.

3.  Trust your knowledge

Whenever the interviewer try to challenge you with a difficult question, answer with what you think it's right. But don't say that without convincing them that you are really right.
A small example happened in my last interview. The Scrum-Master asked me if someone called me during my free time with some work to do, should I do that?
I told him that unless it's in my contract, I shouldn't do because I need my personal life too. Once someone starts to ask you stuff to do home they get used to it.
However, in the end, I told him that I would do (because I would), but I shouldn't. I would because I feel responsible for what I do.

The guy almost kissed me after that.

4. Smile and put yourself in their position

That's my last tip and also very important. Always smile (but don't be weird).
They like seeing that you are laughing and smiling because it means you get comfortable easily and you are probably a good teammate.

They also like when you tell them what you think that would be good for the team (even if you are not part of there yet).
In one of my interviews, One developer asked me if I wanted to start as a teamlead. I told them I would feel better to start as a senior dev and be part of the team first. Like this they would see me not like the guy who stole a position that could be theirs. Nobody likes to have someone else starting the job in a position that you know that you could be good at.

He told me: "Man.. you are really good at that. I know what you are talking about. This job is gonna be yours."
That made my day, of course lol

So.. that's what I have to say. Maybe it doesn't apply for every job, but I bunch of them, yes. I would say that it would apply for any job for developers.

Do you guys have any other tip for the others? Post in the comments.

Aloha!

Thanks, jkenny.

I'd add — Never Ever, ever tell them what you are making now.

Your salary history is your history. Never share.

Yes, be original hehe. Thanks for sharing, hehe. You are awesome. I'm Oatmeal Joey Arnold. You can call me Joey.

LoL.. that's almost too original.haha
