If you have ever read my Introduction post, you would know that a love Koi! They are amazing creatures and all the different varieties always keeps things interesting.
In South Africa we have SAKKS which is the South African Koi Keepers Society. They have a yearly show in Johannesburg where serious Koi folk can bring there star fish to be judged. Obviously there is also stands where you can buy Koi, Koi food or Pond Equipment.
I try not to miss this event even when the weather is not great.
Here's some picks taken at the show. All pictures were taken with a Pentax DSLR Camera.
This pic was through a window on the side of the big tank, which makes it nice to see the fish.
Guide Dog in Training Riggs went with us to the show. Initially he was a bit unsure of these monsters staring at him, but soon settled down and enjoyed the view!
These are two of my favorite kinds of Koi. The plain white one is a Platinum Ogon and the bright yellow and white one is a Doitsu Hariwake Yellow White.
I thought this would make a nice background image. Look at all the tiny Koi! They are all between 5 and 8 centimeters in length.
This one is called a Tancho. It is very a very sought after Koi and the specimen in this photo is a perfect example. You want the red dot to be as centered as possible and as perfectly round as possible. The closer to perfection, the more valuable the Koi becomes. These Koi are popular because the represent the Japanese Flag which is a White Flag with a Red Dot.
Some more variations of Koi. If I were to show everything I would need 5 Blog Posts!
We had a lot of fun this year and we are looking forward to attending next year's show again. SAKKS also regularly hosts events where we can go and visit SAKKS members homes to view their Koi Ponds. I love those outings!
amazing looking fish :)
And I didn't even cover half the different variations we saw in this post.
Thanks for the visit!
