Since the economy fell in 2008, the hope for the millennials of a ‘brighter future’ that we once knew, has cease to exist.
As younglings, we were told that getting a higher education after high school would help achieve all of our dreams that we created in our heads when asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?”. A fire-fighter. A doctor. An astronaut. A pilot. A lawyer. A teacher. We heard day in and day out in the graduations of each grade and the stepping stones we accomplished that
`after college, you can find a great job then start a family and travel, and buy whatever you want, etc’. .
We were so ecstatic with our eyes magnified, our smiles pure and our hearts full of hope as we set out to accomplish the dreams we had. Then when the market dropped, our colleagues, professors, parents and coaches told us `Tough shit, the market collapsed, you will have to go for a higher degree than your AA’ while the expertise were reporting that there weren’t many spots open for higher paid jobs.
Our heads down low, we asked the simple but saddening question..
Now what?
The millennials suddenly had less hope on their plates as their parents, professors and society continued to forcefully spoon-feed them guilt if they had any alternative ideas or dreams than the ones that have been accepted by the mass population.
With loss of trust, bit of anger, but full of determination after the collapse, we are now starting to see the millennials turning 21 years of age, stepping outside of the traditional norm and following their deepest desires, despite what the great depression era or the media has to say.
These millennials are free thinkers. They are activists for issues that truly touch their souls.. They are the travelers, the rule breakers and the misfits.. They are creators of businesses on instagram and etsy. They are freedom followers as they say “screw the system” and go on 5 month traveling expeditions across the world. They are the ones to question everything they have been taught and find their real source (that most of the time lies outside themselves). They are lovers to the earth that past generations have intentionally created to destroy for profit. They are slowly but surely becoming teachers to the young generations that are stuck inbetween of where to go. They are the inspirers as they conspire ideas through the generation above them that are in the mid 30 to 4o’s.
So yes, There is a future for millennials.
But it is not the 9-5 corporate jobs while banging your head against the sterling wheel as traffic pollution suffocates your lungs. It is not the white picket fence hubby-and-wife bible thumbing traditions with a golden retriever puppy that tears away at your leather soles. It is not the single mommy that suffers in stress trying to make ends meet as her baby is engulfing in the isolation of her only lifeline. It is not the hubby cheating on the wifey that has a boob job, goes shopping while gossiping at bonco night that the hubby is a cheater. It is none of this or that..
It is a future that the millennials are creating for themselves. They are finding their canvas, picking up their own damn paint brush and painting a painting that they want. It is a future of creators that will strike you will their knowledge and the story that they carry on their backs. They are the ones that will inspire YOU (the generation above them) to get your shit together and finally follow your heart. It is a future of them acknowledging their talents and running wild with them. It is a future of real freedom that the millennials will make sure is manifested that spiritual books talk about. The future is the millennials and they are kicking ass.
Love the point of view from a fellow millennial!
