Because liberal judges in both the California Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States did away with capital punishment temporarily in the early 1970s, and, therefore, Charles Manson's death penalty sentence was reduced to life in prison. I know how crazy that sounds, but that's what happened. He was even afforded parole hearings subsequently.
